I worked at Symantec

Pros

Symantec trains and keeps employees up to date on the latest tehnologies. Their beneftit package is the best in the area. The cooperation between departments is an example that most other companies should take a good look at. Being a global company and since the recent merger with Veritas, new standards had to be estalished acodd both companies and the consistancy of delivery to legacy customers had to be maintained. I think management has done a great job n moving forward wih this difficult task and the cooperation of all departments was commendable. Processes still need work to smoth them out, even after a couple of years, but overall it is one of the best places to work in my career.

Cons

They base their pay on the surrounding city labor market and the difference in pay for the same position varies as much as 45% between locations. It's a great theory, but it doesn't cost 45% more to live in the portland area as it does in the Eugene area.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify the processes.

    Pros

Great Benfits package and compensation is comensurate with experience and results. Your direct manager is always key to your satisfaction and mine has been very effective at working with me and aknowledging accomplishments. The willingness to provide time off as long as you handle your responsibilities is always a plus. Overall an excellent experience.

    Cons

As with most companies of its size, Symantec is a political environment and can be somewhat difficult to navigate if you don't know the right people. Since the most recent reduction in force, employee morale has taken a hit and will tak a while to recover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Basically to begin to provide a comprehensive marketing strategy that brings all of the various products together so we can all speak with one voice on how we provide value o customers.

I have been working at Symantec

    Pros

The company has industry-leading products and services. It seems finally to have laid out a compelling vision for security, storage, and infomation management. Ostensibly, the company should be able to ride out this recession, since security is not something on which customers should skimp. The company respects employees' work/life balance (though forced PTO at year's end is offensive). The benefits seem competitive, though are shrinking. There are real stars within management, but they seem to be too low on the totem pole to effect any real change.

    Cons

Poor pay. Poor resources. Poor communication. Intractable bureacracy, especially with respect to Finance and HR. It seems that the company rather would let talent walk away than compensate them competitively. Management rejects requests for increased salary and resources based on the fact that Symantec is a "tweener" company and cannot pay like the big boys, even though they like to point out elsewhere that Symantec is the world's fourth largest independent software company and new member of the Fortune 500. This also rings rather hollow when the CEO is the third best compensated CEO in the software industry -- not in the security industry -- in the entire software industry. As of October 2006, Symantec's CEO compensation was behind only the CEOs of Yahoo! and Oracle, much larger companies. I don't begrudge anyone his pay, but don't use the size of the company as a salary marker when upper management is so disproportionately compensated according to the company's own alleged standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay employees competitively. Give them the resources to actually do their jobs. Give employees a reason not to look elsewhere to see if the grass is greener. Stop serving up the yellow kool-aid.
