Working for Uncle Sugar

Current – New

Pros – Supporting the folks that secure our freedom. The stability and benefits are better than average. A pension after 20 years of service is virtually unheard of in the private sector.

Cons – No one is very interested in saving money, but the current fiscal environment may be a catalyst for change. A committment to continous process improvement is absent.

Advice to Senior Management – Adopt private sector business practices and embrace during more for less. Pay for performance is not to be despised, but use to attract and keep the best people.

Not Exciting But Solid

Current

Pros – Stable, predictable. I and many of my coworkers strive hard to do a good job with limited resources and competing demands. nice to work on national issues and feel as ifnyou could make andifference

Cons – Bureaucratic, frequently mired in politics. difficult to get things done. Very toxic environment right now. congress makes us dysfunctional by cutting our resources.

Advice to Senior Management – Stop reorganizing and listen to front line staff more.

Good benefits, but min manning and resources due to present fiscal environment

Current

Pros – Great benefits. 4 weeks vacation, 2 weeks of sick leave a year.

Cons – Present fiscal environment leads to lack of agency resources for training and travel. Plus most agencies are only hiring 1 person for every 2 or 3 that leave. Thus, the remaining employees have to pick up their workload.

Criminal Investigator

Current

Pros – Great working environment with some knowledgeable and competent individuals. We are one big family, with our other brothers and sister in law enforcement. When you need a helping, someone is always there to lend you one.

Cons – I wish there were more competent and qualified people to help handle the tasks at hand. When you do more with less, that's how people get hurt and lives get lost.

A good place to learn what not to do

Current

Pros – Stable employment, as long as you aren't a total screw up you can stay forever.
When there isn't a hiring freeze you can move around the country easily.
Decent benefits.

Cons – Coworkers that have been there forever and are just putting in time until retirement.
More work with less people due to hiring freeze.
People assume you make a lot more than what government work pays.
You have to hop agencies to be promoted, agencies rarely promote within.
Your future is at the whim of congress; if they don't get along, good luck paying your bills.
Furloughs.
No performance bonuses, no getting ahead based on performance.
If you have a crappy manager he/she can stall/sabotage your career throughout the country.

Advice to Senior Management – Promote within and utilize the talent pool you have in office. Help your people get into higher grade brackets, you will be rewarded with loyalty from the talented and hardworking staff instead of them jumping ship at the first chance.
