A minority serving institution, with a new definition for the word Minority (International Student)

Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Miami, FL (US)

I worked at Florida International University part-time for more than a year

Pros- Beautiful location, surrounding, weather, environment
- Lots of eye candy attraction/distraction to lure young minds
- Preferable for people willing to make their way to the top, starting from the very bottom

Cons- Money is nowhere to be found in Miami
- The Teaching Assistants are underpaid, especially considering the expensive lifestyle of such metropolitan city like Miami
- International students are left stranded in an isolated life, not being taken care of properly by University community
- Sometimes assistantship positions requires doing low level work, which international students are forced to do, rather risk academic future in order to pay tuition and bills.

Teaching at FIU

Senior Instructor (Current Employee)
Miami, FL (US)

I have been working at Florida International University full-time for more than 8 years

ProsNice location, beautiful campus and students are eager to learn.

ConsParking, Inept management, high turnover of staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the inefficiency in getting things done correctly. Staff loses forms and material that has been submitted and they keep asking for the same documents over and over again. Management is very inefficient.

Florida International University...great environment, great employer

Technician (Current Employee)
Miami, FL (US)

I have been working at Florida International University part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThis is a really great environment to work. It's friendly, and a rather great place to be. Management is competent, reliable and friendly as well. Lots of room for growth. The university is definitely going places, and so are it's employees! Upper management communicates rather well with everyone else, and the chain of command is rather clear and concise.

ConsNot as innovative as it could possibly be.
