    Pros

Smart, engaged colleagues who want to do right by patients with significant unmet medical needs. True sense of collaboration, great campus

    Cons

Company takes great risks on the science, but is risk averse on its people. Very hard to advance either because there are few opportunities, or unconscious bias rules out anyone who doesn't fit certain phenotypes. High intensity - some leaders mistake action for meaningful outcomes

    Pros

In Genentech, there are ample resources for postdoc to develop their projects. No matter what you want to do, your idea is the limit, not the money. You can always find experts within the company in whatever new experiments you want to do.

    Cons

we are not allowed to write grants.

    Pros

As a consultant they treat you like one of the family. The quality standard is high, which I appreciate. You get more from vendors because you work for GENE.

    Cons

I was treated poorly by the stats people from India. And management did little about it.

    I worked at Genentech

    Pros

There are so many pros to working here. First, it's the people. The coworkers are grounded and well informed. Furthermore, I felt like most of the people had a similar personality, which made it easier to work each other without conflict, or at least less conflict. Second, the environment is so stimulating. One feels like they are in some sci fi movie the moment he/she enters the building. Third, the benefits are amazing! Good luck to anyone interviewing and congratulations to anyone who has received an offer. Do not reject this wonderful place! I only left because I had to relocate more than 300 miles.

    Cons

I cannot think of anything bad to say about working here. If one is working in the Manufacturing Department, there will be odd work hours (swing shift or grave shift), but this is not a con of Genentech, it is just the format of manufacturing. I did not have any bad experiences working here.

    Pros

top 10 best places to work (as of 2012)

    Cons

Going from public to private: Loss of stock options.

    Advice to Management

Strive to live on the bleeding edge of technology.

I have been working at Genentech

    Pros

Excellent science, top notch employees, great teams, incredible benefits. One of the few shining stars in biotech/pharma. You can't fully appreciate how good it is unless you've come from another pharma.

    Cons

Difficult to get promoted. Limited upward mobility is some areas.

    Advice to Management

Please make it easier to hire and promote staff. The process is very time consuming and not value added.

  10. Mixed and deteriorated

    Pros

Nice campus, don't need to work very hard -- also a con

    Cons

In the staff functions, so disconnected from any sense of reality.

  11. Excellent company in a great geographic location, innovation-wise.

    Pros

Great pipeline, great science, great people, great benefits, opportunities for many lateral moves and rotations.

    Cons

Decentralized functional model causes a lot of duplication of effort, competitiveness. At times "one hand does not know what the other is doing". This also applies to interactions with CROs and other vendors. A lot of waste, sadly, but protects "turf."

Luck of the draw on great managers.

    Advice to Management

Lots of opportunity to improve efficiency without pressing on the science and scientists, simply by tweaking the incentives. Must focus on a core where the expectation is cross-functional collaborations.
