I have been working at Genzyme full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible, work from home sometimes. Pay and benefits are decent.

    Cons

Mindless work that needs to be done for stupid inefficient reasons. Have been here a couple of months and little to no integration with the "team". Responsibilities are menial at best. Little to no interaction with anyone. Processes not documented and clumsy. Have yet to see any accountability or follow up for anything. Embarrassing dealing with vendors for non-payment or non-action.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarify expectations and responsibilities, reporting structures. Increase the interaction between teams and transparency of processes.

I have been working at Genzyme

    Pros

    Innovative science, great vacation policy.

    Cons

Sanofi bureaucracy has ruined Genzyme. Difficult to accomplish anything without a great deal of paperwork, and senior management can't seem to settle on a set of project criteria or department structure.

I have been working at Genzyme full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are two major perks of working at Genzyme. The first is a generous vacation package, which includes an end-of-year shutdown. The other is a good 401(k) matching program.

    Cons

The old system of merit-based annual compensation seems to be a thing of the past. Raises are now extremely low for everyone across-the-board. There isn't as much motivation to push oneself, except out of a sense of "company loyalty," by which Genzyme has far overplayed its hand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like to see management return to the structure of merit-based raises and compensation for its high performers, and do away with the current "9-box" system of annual reviews in which people are forced into the same generic "standard" bracket, regardless of their actual performance.

I worked at Genzyme full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic products, really meaningful, company does still retain a special focus on patients.

    Cons

Old organisation is gone, including most of the best people (but not all). More time is spent trying to be important in the Sanofi world than focusing on the real work. Global offices in constant turmoil with Sanofi affiliates.

Company was cut up into different parts of Sanofi and only a core marketing and medical group remains of Genzyme inside a giant messy matrix with Sanofi. Company is living on assumptions from the past that are not completely in tune with today. In most of the organization the accountants and finance people are now more important than the researchers and "biotech with a purpose" people. Pessimism throughout the ranks. Big protector was CEO of Sanofi but everyone under him didn't care about what happened with Genzyme, only what they could grab for their own functions.
