I have been working at H&M

    Pros

    Values
    Flexibility
    Learning
    Strong internal methods and systems
    Ethical
Employee friendly policies and exposure to an international work culture.
    Flexible timing options

    Cons

    Non-transparent management.
Manipulative and incompetent HR staff. Sometimes the HR is so unprofessional that you start wondering if this is even a company to start with!
Absence of a clear development plan for employees.
Salary discussions are usually a monologue.
Inconsistent reviews and no clear expectations to employees.
Blame game and politics. Growth is based on everything else but performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire sensible HR managers who don't try to manipulate employees with their unprofessional talks. Bring a "people strategy" to the organisation and try to retain the good employees. Create a trust-based atmosphere by following company values -(these are totally absent from the company at the time this review is written) Make salary discussions a logical dialogue, rather than a dogma. Managers should start caring a little more about all this.

I have been working at H&M part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Higher pay than average retail
    Employee discount
    Employment benefits
Hours are structured according to your preferred amount; along the guideline of job title

    Cons

    Stretched too thin
Dull structure of responsibilities; may be left at one job for days, i.e. register
Staff is unreliable when it comes to keeping schedule; lunch could come an hour than expected due to missing, or busy persons
Instructions are left unclear, in their need to shorten communications among staff
Limited power with newer associates, causing unwanted, and awkward pauses with incoming customers for the sake of management assistance
Sudden personal issues can clash with pre-made schedules; causing conflicts
    Moderate to high stress levels

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be thorough with employees. I have a difficult time understanding what is expected of me, and am often cut short or scolded in my brief, but more detailed explanations; often interrupted for a few seconds wait (to my annoyance) with immediate instructions to jobs I am not assigned for the day. This can cause a lot of disarray when told to move clothing, or sweep; despite being assigned to register. It is a headache, and causes a lot of frustration.

I have been working at H&M part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great team members(well at least my store), great pay, very flexible scheduling, the ability to learn more about retailing because unlike most stores you're not just stuck in one position for an entire shift.

    Cons

The lack of growth opportunities but only when there aren't many stores in your area and people aren't leaving sup/mgr positions because they love H&M so much but if your willing to relocate the opportunities are endless and I plan on doing just that. The lack of hours but that's with any part time position in retail. And last but not least some of customers. Honestly, customers that trash the store and customers that come in with negative attitudes and refuse to be satisfied with anything are the only real cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at H&M part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

good place to start in retail as they tend to throw you in at the deep end and expect you to learn very quickly which pays off in the end, discount is great and there's always extra staff discount offers every few months and at christmas. season kick off is usually fun at central stores with lots of free food/booze! if you're a full-timer and want to commit 100% to retail they will usually help you work your way up if you express an interest in management/admin, salary in central london stores is great and they always offer overtime

    Cons

worked at 4 stores and 3/4 were always understaffed because of managers trying to save money (so not sure to blame managers or top boss here), main problem I experienced and heard from every other colleague there was that there isn't enough praise.. you do an excellent job all the time and it goes completely un-noticed, then one day you might be struggling because the shop floor is so busy/no staff etc and from then you're criticised.. that was a massive problem expressed by everyone I ever met there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

employing more staff in the stores that desperately need it would really help as these stores tend to be messy with un-shoppable floor stands continually throughout the day because the people that should be tidying are clearing, and the people that should be clearing are having to man the tills alone etc.
