As a recent graduate of this university, I would say I enjoyed my time there.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe academic buildings on campus are close to one another and the quad is beautiful at all times of the year.

ConsThere aren't very many career opportunities with what I studied for (psychology & speech-language pathology research).

very useful job, since you learn while working as a graduate student. They understand that you are a student first.

    Graduate Assistant (Former Employee)

    - you keep learning while working
    - you work with friendly people and the environment is nice.

    Student Technician

Student IT Technician (Former Employee) Normal, IL (US)

ProsThe position gives you a lot of insight into the behind the scenes operations of the University. Flexible work schedule works around your classes and any tests/homework you need to catch up on.

ConsProfessional development is minimal in the position. The workload is more than the size of the staff can handle, so at times it feels like you're fighting just to not move further behind.

Good place to work, but a bit insulated

Manager (Current Employee) Normal, IL (US)

ProsLots of nice people; chance to help students in their futures and help develop the next generation. Good benefits.

ConsParking is very difficult on campus. And the people tend to be isolated in the sense that outsiders often have a hard time overcoming their status as outsiders. There is a definite preference to go with folks who are "local" to ISU.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more willing to hire folks outside of ISU.

    Great Graduate Research Assistant Experience

Graduate Assistant (Former Employee) Normal, IL (US)

ProsFlexibility on when the work could be done and the opportunity to work with different faculty members.

ConsI did not have any negative experiences, but I will point out that as a GA (research) you have to be good at multi-tasking and stay focused in order to be successful.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone

    A very good experience.

Graduate Assistant (Former Employee) Bloomington, IL (US)

ProsWas given the necessary guidance to develop both professionally and personally. Furthermore, the culture is great.

ConsThe only con to working at Illinois State is the low pay. I don't know if I would consider this a con because the cost of living in the area is relatively inexpensive.
