I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lovely people to work with, great shop floor and warehouse staff making it a fun working environment. Everyone works hard for each other, and get along well.

    Cons

Little chance of promotion to anything other than team leader, and those in management positions often have poor communication with those doing the work and are rarely seen on the shop floor. Having said that, some stores management teams are better than others. Applying for a job isn't the easiest and reapplying as a vacational student is problematic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Colleagues often feel there is a huge divide between management and the shop floor. Managers are not seen on the shop floor, and there is little recognition for good work.

There appears to be little progression to anything other than team leader, and when positions do become available, they are not well advertised for staff. The last intake of trainee managers in the store I was at was only disclosed to one colleague, who managed to get onto the scheme, despite at least 5 other colleagues who had all been promised the opportunity to apply, kept in the dark.

All in all, it is a good place to work, but the whole working environment would be better if management involved themselves more with the colleagues, and made more of a team environment, taking into consideration the talents and experience of the colleagues they work with

I worked at J Sainsbury part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Staff Discount, uniform, flexible hours to a point, indoors, training if you ask for it

    Cons

Managers don't care, team leaders are a waste of time. Them and us situation. Managers don't care about staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people do their jobs and Manage the staff don't back stab about people!!!

I worked at J Sainsbury part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

In depth training which covers different topics
    Friendly and helpful staff
Enjoyed serving and communicating with customers
    Good hourly wage

    Cons

My clock in number did not work the first week and had to be rectified. As a result I had been underpaid on my first wage slip. This took 6 weeks to sort out and found myself phoning up many times.

On the first time of working outside on the trollies; they had not realised I hadn't been trained.

6 months is quite a long time to wait for staff discount.

Tills were sometimes not prepared with printer rolls, shopping bags or buzzers to alert supervisors.

It was emphasised not to discuss personal matters, yet staff talked to me about me leaving on the shop floor when I was serving customers, this was not professional.

Organisation and communication needs to be improved in store.

    I worked at J Sainsbury full-time

    Pros

Management tried very hard to ensure colleagues were listened to and happy. A lot of good employee benefits. Good policies and procedures in place to ensure safety of staff and assets. Good training (a full day, followed by a shadow shift.) The managers in my store helped with restocking and other shop floor duties, no "hiding in the office" like some retail places.

    Cons

Can't think of anything off the top of my head!
