Pros and Cons of L&T Construction (B&F IC)

Quality Control Engineer (Current Employee)
Bangalore

I have been working at Larsen & Toubro full-time for more than a year

Pros+ The best place for any fresher to gain experience on construction methodologies/technologies, machinery, labour management etc.

+ For a civil engineer a place to become experts on particularly Formwork as it is a well established system in L&T Construction.

+ Get acquainted to wonderful thumb rules and heuristic problem solving.

+ Almost free accommodation, free transport, and other such benefits help the work life get moving.

+ Brand Value. Opens up other vistas.

Cons- Very highly imbalanced work timings. This means almost NIL life after work.

- Very long working hours. (in my case I work 14-15 hrs a day for 6 days a week). Plus construction sites are 24x7 in many cases. Means Night Shifts/ Sundays working. (works up to at least a good 80 hours a week)

- No gap between projects/ no breaks. When one project nears completion you can immediately expect transfers to another peak project. So there's no rest throughout.

- Payments/Promotions totally depend on the annual rating. And this rating totally depends on your PM. So one is screwed if his rating is low. Sudden changes in ratings require detailed explanation from the PM so they avoid it as much as possible.

- Very difficult to get leaves approved. And since its 6 days working compulsorily and 7 days working more or less every week, time for even doing chores like shopping etc wont be possible.

- For the time put on working the payment is very low compared to other industries, but competitive within the construction industry. My friends in IT majors like Oracle, TI etc put at least 20-25 hours lesser than me and still get paid 3 times of what I'm getting paid.

- Absolutely ZERO design/engineering. L&T is a contractor and designer, primarily (although L&T does have design&build projects). Therefore its only are of concern is material procurement, arrangement, logistics, labour management and implementation. Lets just say more than half the people wont even know the concepts about Bending Moment, Shear Force, The "Why" and "How" etc.

- Even as a trainee you'll be given very high responsibilities without giving any proper training. Mostly you'll end up at the mercy of your mentor. (still many companies dont consider the training period as an experience)

- Nothing like a corporate environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange in work culture is of paramount importance for the sustenance of the company, from within the employee circle. The employee demands are changing and they are more concerned about work life balance than anything. Improvement in pay-scale is also to be contemplated, and introduction of shorter and more number of shifts are required to reduce working hours without affecting the 24x7 work cycle. Team building training and related measures need to be focused for freshers and not just throwing them into the construction field with little or no experience.
