I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company is very conservatively run with predictable and stable performance even in tough economic times as these. Highly intelligent, capable, and experienced R&D/factory engineers interface with industry-best global field sales teams. Business units and shallow internal hierarchy fosters easier inter- and intradepartmental cooperation.

    Cons

Base compensation is sub-par, sometimes leading to lowered morale & motivation. Benefits and amenities are seen as mediocre, with the occasional accusation of the company being "cheap" at the expense of comfort and even functionality.

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Linear as a whole is well managed. Good business model, high profit margin. Good quality control in matured product lines. Not necessary high tech.

    Cons

Not every group's performance can meet Linear's standard. There are still poorly managed, low productive groups eating company's profit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Each product line manager is an anchor. with Linear's money, a superstar should be hired as the anchor. An incompetent manager is unlikely to hire good engineers.

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Profit sharing in the range of 20-30% twice per year. 6-8 week long sabbatical every five years.

    Cons

No incentive for growth. There are very few management positions available, especially for women. It's basically a boy's club. The hiring structure is focused on bringing in design engineers (99.9% male). Everyone else is looked upon as catering to the design community, and as such, not valued. The structure of the company is scattered. There is no centralized IT. Each department fends for itself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company has millions it could invest in its employees, yet it sits on the cash, year after year. When we ask for anything extra, like a gym, basketball courts or even a couch in the women's restroom, the answer is always 'no', in spite of the wealth of cash on hand this company has. This year, in spite of how well we're doing, our annual salary increases were decreased to 4% maximum (down from 5%). Sabbaticals every five years and the 20-30% profit sharing bonuses we receive twice yearly are not enough to address the growing morale problem that exists company wide. Management needs to loosen the purse strings, provide some incentive for advancement (especially for non-design, non-male employees) and realize that the 'supporting' departments are just as vital to the company's well-being as the design department is.

I have been working at Linear Technology

    Pros

    Very intelligent driven coworkers
    Free flowing circuit idea sharing
    Sabbaticals
    Work life balance
Very little red tape & bureaucracy compared to similar companies

    Cons

very few opportunities for advancement (which does NOT mean your compensation stays stagnant too)
    management swears a lot
need to develop superior products with inferior equipment and technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

swear less and update technology in lab. there's quite a bit of design inefficiency from not having the right equipment.

    I worked at Linear Technology

    Pros

    -Profit sharing 2x a year
-Lots of good competent technical people (design, apps, FAEs)
-Not a whole lot of middle management, they run a lean operation
-Chances to do a lot of little things and grow on the job

    Cons

-Not a whole lot of middle management, not much career advancement possible
-Not a lot of change, which is both good and bad. They keep doing good things well, but how long can that continue to work in a mature market like analog ICs
-Profit sharing 2x a year, whether you're a slacker or a superstar, everyone gets the same percentage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be sure to get out and see customers. Don't get too reliant on FAEs to do all of your product definition. Don't be afraid to take business at slightly lower margin to hold onto existing sockets.

I have been working at Linear Technology

    Pros

Good place to learn. Some of the top people in the industry work at Linear. People are treated fairly, and the upper management does things that make sense. In 2008 we had a minor layoff, a 10% pay cut and furlough days, which was much better than the big layoffs (about 25-33%) our competitors had. Excellent profit sharing and very good benefits. Ever 5 years employees get a sabbatical, which is fantastic! Several design centers across USA, and a few internationals ones.

    Cons

You will work much harder than most other places. Transferring between product lines is discouraged, but not impossible. Equipment budgets are tight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.
