I have been working at MD Anderson

    Pros

Some departments are really great and others are really bad. If you find yourself in a bad one you have to wait one year before you can transfer to a new department.

    Cons

The budget has been so strict that they low-ball everyone on job offers, promotions and raises. When I was first given a verbal offer it was $10k higher than my written offer and I was told to take it or leave it. This same thing happened to my predecessor in the same position. I also brought in over $1.3M in grant funding during my first 6 months and I was only given a 0.5% raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't be so stingy,

I worked at MD Anderson as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great opportunities for research and experience, even as a college student with no previous lab experience
Fantastic support and help all along from everyone who worked in the lab as well as the CPRIT coordinators
Lots of information and events organized to introduce interns to possible career paths and future opportunities (grad school, internships etc)
Access to seminars on current research taking place at MD Anderson, campus tours
Pretty flexible time schedules to work around family life (at least in the basic research facilities)

    Cons

Can't complain much about my time at MD Anderson as an intern, it was even better than what I was expecting.

I worked at MD Anderson full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It was a privilege taking care of patients at MD Anderson. Some of my faculty colleagues were truly interested in providing exceptional patient care. A significant percentage, however, seemed more interested in recruiting patients for clinical trials funded by the pharmaceutical industry and padding their CV's with committee work in order to obtain promotions.

    Cons

An inordinate amount of red tape exists at this institution. It takes way too long to get a new idea accomplished. By the time a new idea has been presented at the multiple committee meetings deemed necessary for its implementation, the new idea is old. Since leaving MD Anderson, I have heard multiple complaints from many patients regarding their care there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more involved with direct patient care in order to truly understand the current changes in our country's health care system.

Poor processes, top heavy management with silo's and turf wars. Nothing done quickly. Don't bring your easy button.

I have been working at MD Anderson full-time

    Pros

good benefits and retirement. There are more resources(people - equipment and supplies) than the entire medical center.

    Cons

entitled people. management passes on bad staff to each other just to get rid of the problem staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't have MD's in charge, they are too competitive when it gets down to agreeing on any process.

I have been working at MD Anderson full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

MDA has excellent salary and benefits; I do believe there is opportunity to grow and it's so large that you can move to different a different department and have a whole new job and experience. People are great, patient care is beyond reproach.

    Cons

ALOT of red tape, ALOT of policies and procedures that totally frustrate the faculty and make the job of dept. manager very difficult. New president and EVP-PIC spend more time on developing "moon shots" and "strategic planning" than actually getting to know the areas and figuring out the real problems. Morale is low and I would jump ship in a second if given the opportunity. Many world-class faculty have left and many top executives. Makes me fearful for what's coming up.

I have been working at MD Anderson full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Awesome experien, I love to work here because we are kind of like behind the scene people to help the Doctors diagnose the patient conditions or save life. The insurance is so so but the retirement benefit is great.

    Cons

It is a lot of work, but I love it.
