    Pros

Marriott was a great start. Having no prior knowledge of the hotel industry, it gave me the necessary tools to begin a career. As someone who has worked both in a customer facing (Front desk & F&B) and back office role (Finance), the company always gave preference to its own while promoting..The learning resources were always available, operating procedures were straightforward and easy to learn, software is the best it can possibly be for the industry. Add that to benefits like free food, uniforms, uniform cleaning, a week long motivation program. Exposure to people from different cultures (a lot of property associates are not local) also helps increase knowledge and your soft skill set.

    Cons

Marriott India, however, is another story. I worked in India in a back office function, and trust me, if hell had an office it would be in finance. Training is scarce. A lot of employees don't want to admit that they require training for the fear of being singled out. Bosses are terribly, terribly arrogant and use verbal abuse and public shaming to get their way with associates. This combination leads to slipshod property set up and maintenance. Add politics to the mixture and you get a horrifying mixture of nepotism & brown nosing. Working hours are pretty much 24/7. Get used to 14 hour days, no off days and generic torture from your immediate supervisor. The pay is laughable. When I say laughable, I mean hilarious. You are not paid fairly for the work you do and even then are expected to do more. In short, it isn't a professional environment.

    Advice to Management

Focus on Finance. Finance is the backbone of your properties. Motivate the Finance team. Redesign processes if necessary. Just because you had the same experience does not mean that it is the nature of the job. If you think so, then you need training/exposure. You must "take care of you associates" or you risk losing the best talent and promoting the idiots who don't know any better. The engagement survey is NOT effective, the audits are NOT effective, "GFT" is NOT effective. There is too much "jhol" & "jugaad" associated with these extremely important tools. Rethink, Remodel & Respond.

    Pros

Great company to work for. Training and opportunities for growth are great. The company provides strong corporate support and systems to help operate in an efficient manner. Associate policies and handling is great.

    Cons

Salaries are a bit lower than in general. Implementation of new and inovative ideas are happening slowly and are very controlled. Administrative work is taking a toll on management productivity.

    Advice to Management

Add more liberty to property management specially in areas outside of the US where the same programs and initiatives might not work as they do in the US

    Pros

good start for freshers, lots of training and hand holding, Marriott offers freshers a first time look at world class hospitality systems.

    Cons

work life balance non -existent, arrogant bosses, poor quality of work specific training, gaps in knowledge and poor property setup, salaries well below the industry standard.

    Advice to Management

if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Retain quality staff (including managers) by offering better pay rises, ongoing Marriott - certified training, take the time to recognize and award your staff, improve hiring cycle to prevent any gaps in staffing ;and understand that by treating Managers like your personal lackeys, you effect the culture of the company in a negative way.
