I worked at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsGood training and mentorship
management really cares
if you make it, you make it big - unlimited commission possibility

ConsVery difficult to do well
No real financial support - income is essentially all commission based; even if you get on the stipend, they are very coy about how easy it is to lose it
Somewhat though products to sell

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Nice Place

Intern (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for less than a year

ProsExtreme flexibility (potential con if abused)
-OPPORTUNITY to make a lot of money
-Chance to help people
-Your own business

Cons100% comission
-Takes a couple YEARS to build business
-Lots of cold calling/phoning
-Learn as you go
-SPLIT comissions when starting out
- ~70% turnover = your clients go to someone else when you decide to change careers

Advice to Senior ManagementThis is a VERY tough business, but if you stick the first couple years of learning out, you can be very successful. Have a good +/-6 months of fallback savings to cover bills/ expenses when starting out.

Was not what I expected

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at MassMutual

ProsGood Company history and weekly training is good

ConsYou are not on a salary or even a draw for that matter, yet they want you to document all of your calls and have a pipeline of prospects and work 50 hours a week. After 2-3 months, they are going to start charging you for back office help and supplies.

Advice to Senior Managementgive a draw or base salary. your turnover is really high

Young Professionals out of College Stay Away

Financial Consultant (Current Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for more than 3 years

ProsNice location and seems very professional.

ConsMake sure you have lots of money to start. They charge us for everything business related and nothing is free. Commissions are industry low. Set up like a Pyramid Scheme. Management can now sell and coach you. So while you are selling so are they and if they help you they will want to split the commissions.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook to give new reps a salary plus bonus instead of commission only.

Brokerage Assistant (Current Employee)
Brentwood, TN (US)

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsWorked with a great bunch of people.

ConsGood ole boy company with good ole boy mentality.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe GA at the agency I was with was not very understanding...had a temper and would blow up at the "Leadership" meetings at times. The one-on-ones were brutal, especially if you didn't have the right "take a ways"
