Columbus, OH (US)

Former Employee – worked at Nationwide Financial full-time for more than 10 years

ProsLots of good people, lots of opportunities to work on different things, lots of areas to get into. If you work hard, your reputation can help you direct your career there. The benefits are really good, too. The company is socially progressive, fiscally conservative.

ConsThe weight and inertia of a big organization can be maddening. Process is usually added, not removed. And there's the inevitable network proxies, VPN access, Lotus Notes and other obstacles to just getting your work done.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't blindly apply an "economies of scale" approach to things. Homogenizing things, and merging things, can sound good on paper, but I've seen instances where the opposite tactic would have had significant benefits for the company.

ProsNationwide Financial has a fantastic record of providing their associates with the necessary tools to succeed and they really do care about their associates in some aspects.

ConsThey do a less than stellar job of promoting associates already working at the company to executive type jobs.

Dublin, OH (US)

Current Employee – been working at Nationwide Financial

ProsAbility to move within the company for new opportunities
Benefits
Opportunities to learn more skills
Managers push you for success
Many locations

ConsPay seems to be below what one can find outside Nationwide
Employees are able to move up from within the call center sometimes leaving abilities lacking in IT

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that throwing bodies at a situation does not fix it. Employees should not be moved simply to appease a staffing model. Otherwise, management does a great job empowering and engaging the associates.

Former Employee – worked at Nationwide Financial

ProsI had great co-workers that made the job very enjoyable. Everyone was willing to pitch-in to help out in any situation.

ConsPromotions opportunities are very limited since the organization is very top-level heavy. Too much process for simple tasks in order to get simple tasks completed quickly and easily.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more honest and truthful in terms of opportunities and growth.

ProsAs a midwest firm, there are still some midwest values in place. This can be good and bad at times.

ConsYou can make more elsewhere, but remember many firms out there could care less about you and will fire you wihout a moments hesitation. You may not get rich at Nationwide, but you can make good money and have a work life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease compensation levels for field people.
