Some great talent on staff! Job allows for you to learn many different technologies, while still focusing on your responsibilities.

    Cons

Lacking direction from upper management. Little room for advancement within certain groups! Did I mention lack of vision or direction...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider managing with similar styles or at least similar vision.

    Pros

NM is a true family. They really do care about you and who doesn't love that discount? NM only takes the best of the best.

    Cons

It's more of a glamorous job, but it looks great on a resume.

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good pay in the $20 range. Pleasant working conditions, clean store, great visuals, help with stock, good housekeeping staff, store was well maintained.

    Cons

There is tons of pressure to meet sales goals. Some in department were hourly and others straight commission. There was a lot of tension between employees. Managers are tense. One of my managers was the WORST in all of my years of working. I ended up working most weekends including Sundays and most holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees make it happen. Encourage good customer service and kindness and team work between employees.

    Pros

Employee discount, nice coworkers, great location, sample sales, fashion insight

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits and always room to grow. They have the best luxury product assortment in the business. And I had a ton of autonomy to do my job. I learned a ton.

    Cons

Must be self motivated, there is not always a ton of support once training ends. Very rigid paths to growth. Benefits are good but compensation is usually on the low end of industry average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training! I hear that some of the training I received (like Excel) has been cut. Big mistake - you need to train your employees in order for them to be independently successful!

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time for less than a year

    Pros

People still think about the Neiman Marcus that existed when Stanley Marcus was alive so it's great to have their name on your résumé. The compensation they offer is very competitive.

    Cons

They are no longer the great company they once were. I was in a management role there and have many years of industry experience. The culture at NM is very secretive - with associates and customers. There's a lot of "smoking mirrors" about business (ie. saying things are good when business is really terrible). The company is basically working in the red. With the second sale to private equity buyers the company now OWES more than they are worth (according to an article in WWD). They are constantly turning out the same old sale promotions over and over expecting different results. There is no innovation or thinking outside the box. Corporate is obsessed with what their competitors are doing instead of focused on ways to rebuild their brand and generate real sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop looking at everyone else! Leverage some real talent inside the company and start the hard work to rebuild your brand. Long term, offering a different extra markdown sale every week is not doing to dig your business out of the hole it's in. It's just making it worse.
