I have been working at Nexen full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Benefits Package
    Flexi Fridays
People mainly a good group of people

    Cons

    No Clear focus
Middle Managers do not really know what their staff are working on some openly admitt to doing nothing
Pet projects seem to be worked in under the radar without following process. Often as a result they are not strategically aligned with other projects
    Lack of accountability
Redundancies likely in UK during next 6 months
People scared to speak up as those who have tried seem to leave suddenly.
Too few workers getting extremely overloaded. Can appear as though 5 managers to 1 worker.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really look at the issues facing company.
Too many employees/contractors have been brought in for specific work and been absorbed into head count.
Question middle management about what their staff is doing do they really know.
Too many people think sending email is a job.
Tackle the culture of spin doctors who make self promoting their main agenda. Actual look at what they have achieved. Not what they have taken credit for.

I have been working at Nexen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good compensation. Flexible benefit packages, compressed work week options (couple of fridays off per month in exchange for slightly longer days).
    Useful in house training.

    Cons

3 yrs of change and uncertainty have taken a toll on employee morale. Lots of retirements have opened up promotion possibilities but the company has also contracted due to selling off domestic properties.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue the emphasis on the core business of producing but don't abandon the socially responsible values.

I worked at Nexen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nexen has a lot of good people. There are a lot of long-term employees there, those with 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of experience. The benefits package is very good.

    Cons

These days (2014) Nexen = change. After the CNOOC acquisition a great number of employees left of their own accord, with a large chunk out of middle and upper management. Since then there have been significant layoffs. As a result reporting structures are completely turned around and no one really knows what's going on. Morale is very low. HR is currently a bull in a china shop, and showing very little sympathy for valid concerns. I had some integrity concerns that arose prior to my termination.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Things may need to change in order to streamline operations, but don't push for change just for change's sake. Recognize that gutting a company or even a department also means losing excellent employees. HR needs to assist in the change by being helpful, sympathetic, and professional, rather than acting as the emotionless executioner.

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, used to have a good talent pool within the company.

    Cons

Overworked without support because a lot of people from various departments have been let go!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make changes without considering full impact to business; don't make changes just for the sake of it.

I worked at Nexen full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It was a good place to work, many people cared and wanted to see the company grow.

    Cons

Some persons that were there too long were difficult to change in their ways. Wages were lower than peers within the industry. HR department stated that they were competitive, but some of their opinions were dated as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When it was Nexen Inc, it was a good company, many of the upper management cared, but were not open to have external companies review their culture, therefore they were unable to learn from their mistakes and grow. Those are only two of the many reasons they were sold. My rating on Upper management only refers to the last two prior to the sale, they are very good persons, but not the persons required for the position.

I worked at Nexen as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

There is close proximity to the 7 St. cycle track and the LRT at the Canadian head office. Onsite underground bike parking is free. As the building is in the west end of downtown Calgary, surface lot parking is a bit cheaper than in other parts of downtown. There are cold drinks in the meeting rooms, along with free coffee, fruit and granola bars in the kitchen.

    Cons

Morale has taken a big hit since the CNOOC acquisition of Nexen. Cutbacks and layoffs are a regular [monthly/quarterly] occurrence, and that has taken its toll. IT was recently restructured into a matrix management arrangement. Many IT projects are, to paraphrase one long-time PM, half-baked. Specifically, some IT projects have a very limited scope and budget with questionable business benefit, with poor support from both the business and IT, yet they go ahead anyway. I worked a few projects that could have been replaced by two or three facilitated meetings, and wrapped up in a week instead of dragging on for months.

The building [Calgary head office] is very dated in terms of layout and decor, although the Marketing dept has a very nice space.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Internal communication is a problem, as it is in many companies. Business units [corporate, oil sands, Nor Am gas, UK] are in silos, and aren't well integrated. Nexen UK is operating like independent corporation, and a way should be found to integrate them better with the other groups.
