I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

great technological innovation in its day, recognized leader in telecommunications advances that gave us caller id and voice over ip, but couldn't get out of its own way in the end

    Cons

succumbed to the crash of 2009 and self interests of the top leaders; declared bankruptcy in 2009, after top leaders ensured they got what they needed out of the company coffers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

should have moved faster and with more determination in changing the company culture; employees dedicated themselves to the company and its legacy, but leaders too worried about their own position to care

    Pros

Terrific products, good collaborative culture, innovative teams, and an exciting marketplace

    Cons

Overly complex organization structure, too many market directions, complicated processes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company was essentially dissolved and sold off in parts to other entities, so no need to suggest advice

    Pros

Fantastic to work with such talented people on world class products! We listened to our customers and our designers and, by doing so, created the most reliable and feature rich telecommunication products in the world.

    Cons

Last few CEOs did not understand the business and started cost cutting and layoffs which improved their bonuses but killed innovation, hurt moral, and destroyed customer confidence. Trust your staff. They created the business and have a passion and desire to have that success continue. Employees were treated as a liability rather than the intellectual assets that made the company what it was.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead through vision, not cost cutting. Listen to your people. Together Nortel could have had an excellent future. Instead, management threatened employees with firing and verbal abuse if the disagreed with any proposed changes. A company cannot function that way for long, and Nortel died after 125 years of success thanks to this poor management.

    Pros

Even though you had a set job description with corresponding responsibilities, there was always the opportunity to try new things, join new projects, etc - never ending on-the-job learning potential.
    Very courteous and professional colleagues.

    Cons

The Company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and has closed it's doors.

I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Nortel was a Canadian icon with plenty of intellectual property. A lot of money was spent on R&D & it owned many patents still in use today.

    Cons

It's unfortunate that mismanagement & the financial crisis finally put this company into bankruptcy. Selling the right line of business of at the right time could have meant that other lines of business would continue to survive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Obtain information & make a clear decision. Don't freeze when put in a position to determine a company's future.

I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Onsite gym, excellent benefits, lots of perks and excellent hands-on technology. Probably artificial but had 8 consecutive quarters of pay increases from 1999 to 2001. Essentially my salary rose 50%! But then stayed the same...

    Cons

Dysfunctional performance reviews, really low morale the last few years, greedy and incompetent management.

In 5 years there not once did I advance professionally. Every performance review I received was excellent, but the economic situation of the company rarely promoted anyone from within unless you were upper brass management. You were told you still had a job and they used that weight to keep your pseudo-high salary alive.

As layoffs progressed, cubicle land became desolate so more opted to work from home. I recall in 2005 I was the only employee near 4 pillars of my lab. Finally they relocated/consolidated everyone from that lab into another lab. Shortly after that expensive move our group was told "the news".

    Pros

Incredible R&D and position in the Central Office market for Telco's, Tier 2 when it came to cellular.

    Cons

Succumbed to poor management from mid '90s onwards, became de-focused and lost its way.
