Work experience

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Bangalore

I worked at Novell full-time for more than a year

ProsNot much work pressure to employees.

ConsNo proper project plans. Worst project managers who doesn't even know the 10 % technical knowledge. No skip level meetings so managers are careless in work. Upper level management is not proper in taking the feedback from engineers.Managers are taking so much wrong decisions . They dont even know how managers are fooling the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementStrong advice to upper management if they want their company to exists , they have to take feedback from engineers about their managers work, and keep an eye how the managers are taking decision in projects other wise these company will go in loss of poor management.

Good company to work for (not sure if that continues)

Software Consultant (Current Employee)
Bangalore

I have been working at Novell full-time for more than a year

ProsGood Pay
Work-life balance depends on how one chooses. If one feels accountable/feels ownership for respective component, will end-up doing more work. If one doesn't bother about one's own component but just doing whatever been assigned/asked to do, probably doing less work. If one chooses to work moderate, yes it is work-life balanced.
So it is expected/assumed that people are self motivated, but not many people are self-motivated (not making a good mix of people in the team).
Really very good feed-back and appreciation for the work done (even though end-up doing more work it is some-what encouraging and motivating).
No politics.

Cons-> Work life balance depends on how one chooses
-> Less technically competent people (some not all) growing in the Lader based on years of experience but not based on capabilities and the value additions to the company which leading to improper quality of product/maintenance (This is becoming worse day by day because smart people also suffering due to these people and leave the company).
-> Management, some managers are really great and some managers are not. You will be lucky if you get a good manager.
-> management has make sure Load-balance is happening properly.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure talent gets first compared to number of years of experience (in Novell/outside) because 1 extra year is not making any difference unless one has utilized that period for improving self and utilized it for proper learning. A rock in year 2000 to year 2010 doesn't make any difference, but a plant in year 2000 can become a tree by year 2010 and can yield good.
Have proper Road-map and plan accordingly.
