I have been working at OfficeMax

    Pros

The culture is "customer first" and the reputation of the company seems to be very positive in terms of service outside of the company. Vacation is above average (2 weeks to start, up to 4 after 5 years) and days off aren't usually hard to come by. Details (and closures) from big merger with OfficeDepot in 2013 are still being worked out.

    Cons

The pay isn't the greatest and raises are somewhat measly. Also, the career paths are minimal. Ordering system needs to be seriously revamped (not upgraded, just re released so that it makes sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put some snax in the breakroom. Upgrade ancient register systems. If you add something new, TAKE AWAY the old system or device.

    Pros

Work/life balance, the people I work with

    Cons

Pay, Corporate not being realistic, merger, High Turnover due to horrible pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your bottom tier associates better. I'm a manager and can't constantly replace employees with unskilled employees because we refuse to pay the people that work for us.

I have been working at OfficeMax part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

My store is a quiet, relaxing place to work most of the time. The customers are usually very friendly and understanding, and my coworkers make my job that much more fun! This is a great job to start out with. Even in our busiest seasons (Back-to-School and Christmas) it's a job you can handle. Started working at sixteen and didn't have a hard time adapting.

    Cons

Micromanagers, annoying/ride customers. During dead hours it can get kind of boring. There really isn't much to complain about!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take what the employees say to heart. We do not waste out breath just to spite corporate.

    Pros

Few requirements for hire. Opportunity to learn management skills in a retail environment with business minded customers.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations. Metrics that are counter intuitive, and inconsistent with industry trends.

Former Employee - Basic Sales Associate in Austell, GA (US)

I worked at OfficeMax part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Management was always very interested in the wishes, skills and desires of its employees. It was a very clean workplace, and goals were normally clearly detailed.

    Cons

Occasionally seemed a bit affected, as if they were trying too hard to care. Additionally, whenever there were problems in the store (i.e. customers staying in too late, customers demanding free products, etc.), there seemed to be a lack of any clear solution offered by management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't try so hard to be "cool" with the employees. Let it flow.
