I worked in Reed Elsevier Technology Services for a little over two years.

ProsCurrent technologies, great co-workers, decent benefits.

ConsThe use of mass layoffs to improve the bottom line.

Advice to Senior ManagementControl the corporate rumor mill, most employees knew layoffs were coming weeks in advance.

A good company if you're in the right location

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent benefits package, including time off for volunteer work, access to e-Learning is included. Outstanding people to work with, very smart and focused. Would recommend as long as you're in a "hub" city

ConsIf you don't work in one of the major hubs you are left out of a lot of things, and they seem to be closing a lot of satellite offices regardless of size.

    Work Experience

Systems Analyst (Current Employee) Dayton, OH (US)

ProsThe work is really stress free and the people you work are very helpful since the average tenure is about 15 years and so they have lots of info to share.

ConsThere are occasional layoff seasons and I've seen two seasons in my 1 years working there.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more young and innovative employees to build in house products as opposed to buying licenses and software that can be replaced with open source products.

    Marketing Internship

Marketing Intern (Former Employee) Waltham, MA (US)

ProsGreat environment, learned about many different functions and divisions. The work space was redesigned and improved allowing for better meetings and a more enjoyable atmosphere

ConsNot much growth opportunity. There seemed to be a high turnover rate with many of the employees having worked there for a very short period of time.

Incredibly challenging but not without its rewards

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsThe people.
Most of the people I dealt with whether they be part of the shared services group, business controllers and finance teams of both the US and UK business divisions or even the AsiaPac team..all of them are incredibly knowledgeable and open to collaboration.

ConsUnfortunately in 2013 there has been significant RIF(s) in the US in the operational and SS areas (not sure about what is going on in the UK) A good chunk of that talent has been taken away; the people that are left are being stretched to increase output without additional resources or improved infrastructure. Communication between senior management and the its' reporting teams is not always optimal.
