    Pros

Organizers, researchers, communicators and admin staff are some of the most dedicated to the cause, hard-working people you'll meet.

    Cons

Career advancement is rare and highly politicized, internal deliberations are opaque, senior management has no respect for staff. The management-staff culture in the field and at headquarters is dysfunctional. Work is siloed and closely directed, with little done to harness the passion and creativity of people who work there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote talented managers rather than politically connected hard workers.

    Pros

The political work matches my own beliefs. It's hard to come up addwith more than that. The benefits (not the pay and working conditions, those are terrible) aren't bad.

    Cons

They are disenfranchising their own membership offering minimal protection, guidance, and support to people paying for them to exist. The depth of the lies they've told is unbelievable to anyone who understands unionism. Everyone, member and employee, sees the heart-breaking truth the closer they get to those in power. They've become so corrupt that thousands of pro-union advocates believe they should be torn down and re-built, with none of the current leadership left in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign. If you've made it to management you've already harmed too many people. You wouldn't be allowed to advance if you hadn't. Judging by past and present performance, relinquishing power is impossible for your fee -no matter how accurate the reasons are. So, you could try remembering why you got invloved in unionism and re-build this through those beliefs. You are now in charge of a club. Make it a union.

    Pros

Helping workers find a voice in their workplace is very rewarding. Meeting people, hearing their stories and building relationships makes organizing a worthwhile career, in spite of the demanding work schedule. Co-workers make the job bearable.

    Cons

Impossible hours--the average is 11-12, and sometimes you are required to work 14 hours. Unrealistic expectations. Little respect for individual opinions. Lots of reprimands and negative reinforcement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much to know where to begin....

    Pros

Great people, supportive work environment, budget for professional development, mentorship program, vested in the pension after five years, excellent health care benefits and a decent amount of paid time off. There is also an overall commitment inside the union to do big, bold things.

    Cons

The internal politics can be extremely challenging, especially as you move up the ladder inside the organization. Too much decision-making by committee. There is also an overall lack of accountability at the highest levels of the organization, where relationships and favor-trading matter more than results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Protect your staff from internal politics. Hold all staff accountable to transparent, measurable performance metrics.

    Pros

SEIU is doing great work. Many of the staff are fantastic and you'll have the opportunity to work on some inspiring campaigns. The pay is reasonable and the benefits are the best I've had.

    Cons

Internal politics create a toxic work environment. I came to SEIU because I believed in the organization but after several years here I can't take the staff drama. Several individuals take the bulldozer approach to get what they want and senior management rewards that kind of behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't jump to conclusions and try to understand things before you issue orders.
