    Pros

Train their employees' and keep them up to date with progressive changes in industry; Promote work/life balance; Safety is huge for this company.

    Cons

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are many career opportunities at Safeway because of the size of the organization. I have been fortunate to work my way up. I like many of the people I work with and we have extensive data we can use to make decisions.

    Cons

The number of "initiatives" we are trying to chase is endless, there are so many new programs that it causes a lot of needless work and makes selling groceries very complicated. The company does not invest in training and there is not a culture of "rewarding" employees with team building activities or time off to attend training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify our go to market plan, stop trying to do what all of our competitors are doing and just decide on a long term strategy and stick with it, making adjustments along the way.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Potential for growth, large Team environment, ever changing

    Cons

Salary compared to hours. Salary is based off of 40 hour work week, yet you are scheduled 50. Very rarely do you work just 50.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better get competitive with your wages because water cooler talk is that everyone is jumping ship! Haggen and others are calling employees.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I started in the deli department and after two months I went to the Starbucks kiosk. A few months later went to the bakery and then a few months after that, I became a pharmacy clerk. A few months later I moved up to Portland and was promoted to supervisor then Grocery Manager/Head Clerk. It only took one year to make it into management while being a full time college student. I really enjoy my job and any time the Store Mgr or Asst Store Manager go on vacation I get to fill in for them.

    Cons

Corporate often has unrealistic expectations and operating ratios can never be met unless myself and the store manager spend half the day checking. Lines get long yet according to our 104.5% O/R goal, we cannot afford another checker. Hopefully the buy out will fix this issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give everyone an equal opportunity to get promoted. This company is very political in terms of moving up.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay is great and our bonus is the best ! Senior Management has made a lot of positive changes that allow for SM's to focus on running a store, setting higher standard on store presentation to increase foot traffic/sales and our meeting demands of customer verses meeting deadlines on a report. A lot of opportunities for career advancement with THE BEST training, hands-on and in class book work. Co-Managing available for moms making it easier to be a working mom.
Overall I love my job and love working for this company even after 11 years!

    Cons

55-60 hour work week, no OT - BUT pay is great.

    Positive Outlook
