Pros – There are a lot of benefits at being at a larger company like Skanska, and for this industry, it's a great organization to have on the resume. They excel at their core competencies: building projects really well, in a safe manner, with sustainability in mind. I'm also really impressed by all the initiatives they implement, from they promote innovative tools and processes to green. They also really care about the people and do a great job with internal and external training -- not as many employers do this as you'd think. You have to stay proactive in your career development but with probing good things can happen.

Cons – The downside to a larger organization of this kind is a mess of politics the higher you go. It's not immune to leadership issues, so it's best to learn quickly who the people are that make the decisions that will impact you in your day-to-day. Also, a fair amount internal communications issues, although they are working on it, and the red tape they experience with their European counterpart Skanska AB is very intense sometimes.

Advice to Senior Management – Time to find a better way to recognize your people, it's the little things that matter, and I think more people would like to feel like leadership is more accessible.

Pros – Good job security. A chance to work on some of the most challenging and unique projects in the country and in the world. Opportunity to work abroad.

Cons – Advancement can be difficult since it is such a large company. Pay increases for merit are very seldom. They do not reward great personal performance. It seems that everyone from the lowest to the top performers receive the same "cost of living" pay increases each year. The only way to make more money is to get promoted.

Cons – Coorproate management lack the vision of leadership required to run a company that size. Unwilling to provide training for employees to enhance their talents.
