Amazing work environment and job that I am lucky to have!

Presenter (Current Employee)

I have been working at Smithsonian as an intern for less than a year

ProsCo-workers, boss, staff and visitors are all amazing.

ConsIt can sometimes be very busy which makes it hard to do my job to the best of my ability.

Model makers Dream job.

Model Maker (Former Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Smithsonian full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe best thing about this job is the ability to work in a clean and safe environment. Concern for OSHA regulations was very high on the list of priorities. As an artist this was very important to me. The work was challenging and creative. I went home with a feeling of accomplishment every day.

ConsIt is a huge organization and things don't happen quickly. It can really try your patience to wait for things to happen.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpeed up requests for work and allow overtime.

Satisfying but not long-term

Image Technician (Former Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Smithsonian as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsGreat work environment, very laid back and everyone loved to share. As an intern I was encouraged to learn and branch out upon my field of study. Everyone loved sharing their experiences and knowledge.

ConsAs a contractor, I got paid whenever the Government seemed to have some money laying around (almost never). Even tied to my SSN# they frequently lost my contract money. I didn't see my boss for months at a time since he was always traveling. I was always encouraged to slow down because government workers "would run out of work if everyone had my work ethic."

Invaluable Summer Internship

Design Intern (Former Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Smithsonian as an intern for less than a year

ProsI got a broad range of experience while working at the Smithsonian for a summer at the Office of Exhibits Central. I was able to work on many different tasks and see a range of functions of the office.

ConsReally, the only downside to the internship was that it was not paid. Also, I was working in the office in New Carrollton, so it was a bit inconvenient.

Friendly, government, low stress environment

Information Technology Engineer (Former Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Smithsonian full-time

ProsCompetitive salary, low stress environment due to being mostly taxpayer funded. More innovative, cool and flexible than most government agencies.

ConsStill suffers from big government syndromes: slow to make changes, budgetary uncertainty (congress CRs causing projects to go on hold), unmotivated "govie" staff

Awesome place, but management could do better

Education Specialist (Former Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Smithsonian full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat location and academic environment

ConsNo advancement, especially for minorities and discriminatory practices by Managers/Dept. Chairs

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior Management/Directors should stop turning a blind eye to obvious discriminatory practices by Managers/Dept. Chairs. You may have smart, hardworking minority staff that have been around many years. If you haven't seen their names come up for promotion in over 10 years, start asking questions. Get in touch with all your workers, not just your Managers.

My experience at the Smithsonian was and is always fabulous and truly enjoyable.

Staff Assistant, Management Support (Former Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Smithsonian full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe Smithsonian is very diverse, wonderful employees perks and the people that visit and movie stars that come there and just a host of other wonderful things.

Consparking is not so good. Walking out from buliding to building in the winter is not so nice but the Summer and Spring days make up for that.

Advice to Senior ManagementAlways treat your employees like precious jewels because they are. Work flow is much more productive when the workers are happy.
