I have been working at Southern Company full-time for more than a year

ProsFamily oriented, little more lay back work environment compare to other companies; unless you are in the area of high demand.

ConsAs of 2012 there are still many older work force in the company.

Has a very strong culture

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Southern Company

ProsVery strong culture where if you fit in, you can do well.

ConsThey really, really favor engineers and those are the only ones who will move up in the company. Benefits are good, compensation is just average or below.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove the salary structure. Open up new channels for employees who don't have an engineering degree.

Wonderful company to work for with great workplace environment.

Software Engineer Coop (Current Employee)
Birmingham, AL (US)

I have been working at Southern Company as an intern for more than a year

ProsPeople. This is very much a "Southern Company". The people here are genuinely interested in your well-being, and treat everyone as part of a big family. I haven't met a single employee who hasn't been very happy working here. Compensation is good as far as internships go (I'm technically a coop student), and I was given the LEAD on some huge projects once they knew I could handle it. They really do respect you, and will use you to the fullest extent they believe they can. Wonderful company to be a coop trying to get some real work experience/credentials.

ConsThe only downsides to me are the fact that if you don't really fit in with the stereotypical "Southern" demographic (conservative Republican, Christian, etc.), you will be very much in the minority. As I mentioned above, they are all very respectful, but you just have to be okay with being surrounded by people who may strongly disagree with your views (many people don't do well in that situation). Also, unless you're actively aspiring to be in the power business, it will be more of a stepping stone or a place to coast until you get where you want to be, but it can be a perfect jump off point all the same.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you're doing.

Very Good Company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Southern Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsProfessional Enviroment, Fair treatment, Fair Compnesation

ConsNo career path for techinical people. You will sit watch as degreed folks ride the 'career rail' following a predestined path while others drift aimlessly.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou don't have to give techinical folks management positions, just do not cap their income potential.

A place to turn off your brain...you don't need it

Systems Analyst (Current Employee)

I have been working at Southern Company

ProsThe benefits are great and you get a pension. The pay is ok and the bonus comes in at around 17% yearly. It is a stable company and generally unaffected by fluctuations in the market (no layoffs)

ConsSouthern is great for the long haul IF you have no drive and are ok with losing your skill set to overpaid contractors. There is no career path for technical people. You will get stuck in their level 3-6 matrix. Make sure you come in the door at AT LEAST a level 5 because you will be there for 10+ years. Sr. Management in IT is incompetent and non-technical. This problem is rampant. It takes decades to get promoted (when someone dies or retires after 45 years)

The interview process for internal moves is a joke - they already know who they want to hire, but go through the motions to stay legal. You won't work hard or long hours. It's just not for everybody.

Advice to Senior ManagementIT needs to be gutted and totally restructured.

Don't go to a nuclear plant

Engineering Support Co-op (Former Employee)

I worked at Southern Company

ProsPay was good. Could wear blue jeans every day.

ConsThere is NO engineering work to do at the nuclear plants. I was given 100% administrative responsibility that did not require any kind of technical knowledge. They did not listen at all to what group the co-op would like to work in the following term. The majority of the people in engineering support are working there because they couldn't cut it at a real engineering firm.
