    Pros

Southern Company has an open developmental move program that allow to to try working in different departments within the company

    Cons

Southern tends to have a Good Ole boy mentality. This subsequently puts people who are not good managers in management positions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house with the employee level management.

    Pros

Great pay, benefits and job security.

    Cons

Not a cutting edge company and steeped in tradition. Can be frustrating when you know change will help but no one will accept it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the siloed operating companies. One company, one brand that all employees belong to. Too much APC vs GPC garbage that stops change for the better from happening.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, good job security, great people to work with

    Cons

pitiful management i.e. only knowledgable on pushing employees past the limit, very overwhelming expectations, very unnecessary style of management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

not much hope so not really worth mentioning but to suggest a minima, create an enjoyable atmosphere for employees to work in by treating them like people. Be firm but mix in previous leadership style so company can get back to begin the best in the business.

I have been working at Southern Company as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Flexible Schedule
    - Really no hard to reach dead lines
    - Laid back atmosphere

    Cons

    - If your a contractor your more or less a hired slave, they keep you around for only as long as they need you and cut you loose.
    - Direct employees kick back and allow you to do the majority of the work while they get all of the benefits.
    - You are not on the same level as direct employee and are looked at as not equal.
    - The will tell you how much they value you and how much your needed, but when you ask about coming on direct, there is always an excuse

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off you butt and see who really is getting your work done. Odds are, it's not who you think. Contractors carry your company and many of them that have been on board for a number of years are getting very frustrated with the continued run around.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

pay, flexible hours, benefits, access to multiple organizations and groups tied to the community

    Cons

inadequate management, questionable ethics, office retaliation....could go on for a quite a while with cons. Yes, there are benefits but the cons and lack of leadership outweighs the benefits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest time and effort into acquiring members of management with actual ability to run a department properly. People that are knowledgeable, fair, accountable and interested in the development of their staff, instead those they CHOOSE. Individuals who will discourage and address office gossip, unprofessional behavior, office retaliation and a host of other concerns that can plague a department. It would be great to encounter some members of management that want to know their employees and listens to the concerns of those whose efforts keep them in management positions. Staff with character, integrity and an interest in acting ethically in all instances.
