I worked at Southern Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The perks as an employee are great. You get paid well, and don't have to work that hard.

    Cons

The organization is slow to move, rewards tenure over performance, and is highly inefficient. Even though there are many opportunities for the company to better implement technology to eliminate middle and back office jobs, the company does not undertake those projects for fear of having to lay off employees of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the fat in the business. In your business, it is more important to look busy than to actually be doing work.

There was a lot of pressure to do a good job and very little appreciation when you really did a good job.

I worked at Southern Company as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Stable company with great co-workers. Lots of information given during training and good pay.

    Cons

At first, I was given the impression that it would be a 2 year contract but it ended suddenly with no prior notice. I was called to the office, sent downstairs and told that the contract ended right then. I received a great review but they ended the contract saying that the sponsoring company discontinued financial support.

I worked at Southern Company full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Good benefits, great work environment.

    Cons

    Hard to make career progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More inter-connectivity. Corporate shouldn't be just corporate, Call Center shouldn't be just call center. Career-minded employees feel limited to whatever facility they're presently on.

I worked at Southern Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good hours and flexible with empolyees

    Cons

EOO says it all about this company.. Promoting minorities' over more qualified people was a common theme amongst the company. In fact they prided themselves with this accomplishment. If you are a minority this is the place for you..

A Decent company with highs and lows

    I worked at Southern Company

    Pros

    Great place to work
    low stress
    Onsite gym and nursing station

    Cons

Engineers don't test new hardware; expect sys admins to test
Lack of training every year - we always have money for training then strangely it disappears
Politics - people are rewarded for staying at the company; not actually knowing what their job entails
I've heard this company was in a youth movement for the past 10 years - still haven't seen it.
Treat the contractors, the ones who actually work harder than the employees, like sub-humans.
Will contract an employee for 10+ years with no desire to bring them in full-time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please change the mentality in the departments; Support staff not appreciated. Contractors are not appreciated within their own groups and work ten times harder than employees who has been there over 35+years and just "riding the wave"

I have been working at Southern Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Stable company with good benefits and fair pay. Great people, many of whom spend their entire careers there. Access to great resources, education, organizations, etc.

    Cons

Slow moving. Corporate politics can stifle progress and creativity. Many have become complacent, lack motivation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To encourage a culture of innovation, leadership must discourage the corporate hierarchy. Executive garages and office/cube location based purely on on job grade reflect an old school way of thinking. Learn from the work environment at today's leading companies.
