I worked at State of Arizona

    Pros

The best reason to work at ADJC has got to be helping the youth. If that is not your number 1 reason to want to work for them, then this is not the job for you. Job security, excellent benefits, a 20 year retirement plan, above average pay and it is very easy to promote once you are in.

    Cons

The politics of working for the state such as; things change under different governors and officials. Internal investigations polices employees although they would like you to believe they are policing the youth. Constant stress of dealing with difficult youth combined with some bad management (not all). Also: keep in mind that not everyone is there for the right reasons, and security is sometimes on a different page than unit staff which causes conflict when dealing with the youth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To unit managers: Get on the same page as your employees and spend more time on the units as opposed to being in administration procrastinating with upper management.

To administrators: remember what it was like to be a lower level staff, and never forget that they are the people who hold everything together.

I worked at State of Arizona part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good co-workers, if your building has a cafeteria in it good food as well at reasonable rates

    Cons

IT Management doesn't understand basic IT concepts, but if it works others don't care how ugly systems are behind the curtain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote standards, statewide software licensing, auditing BEFORE security issues arise.

    Pros

    Cons

Outdated equipment, Union manager still run the offices and everyone is afraid of their own shadow. Pay is very low with little opportunity to increase it even with good to excellent reviews

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop training for attrition, start retaining good quality employees, the people of Arizona deserve it

I worked at State of Arizona full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good health and dental benefits, good sick and vacation leave time accumulation.

    Cons

Dealing with customers that think "they" pay your salary, like we as taxpayers don't contribute to our own salaries. Having to work for the latest political hack, or appointee who is given position of management, without qualifications necessary to perform job effectively. Having to deal with the hidden agendas of Legislators, who are only thinking of getting reelected, not the best outcome for the State.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember, this is supposed to be representation of the "people", not just special interests groups that fatten your wallets and campaign coffers. Make managers more personally responsible for their actions, quit hiding behind the shield of government immunity.
