I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Culture - very supportive. People work HARD at Travelers but value family and have fun.

    Cons

It's a BIG company so change is SLOWWWWWWW.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bonuses are fantastic for high performers. Salary increases are not so great. There should be more consideration made for nursing moms in the way of nursing rooms and such. Parking can be a challenge in some locations.

I have been working at Travelers Companies as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Travelers was very accommodating to my personal schedule. Dress was casual. My manager went above and beyond to help with my job and mentor me.

    Cons

Travelers is a large company that isn't changing anytime soon. If you are looking for a company on the cutting edge of modern growth, this is not the company - or industry - for you.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

A lot of paid time off & decent benefits.

    Cons

Minimal annual raises, continuously working on outsourcing all non phone jobs, company cares more about numbers than how the employees feel. They screen scrape so they can watch your every move and accuse you of doing things wrong on a daily basis. Large amount of employees with anxiety and stress related illnesses. Every system change that is made is worse than the last. When they do layoffs, those who put most their lives into the company are the first to go. Tons of micromanaging. Makes it impossible to breathe there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees instead of people who don't do the job before making "improvements."

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time

    Pros

I had an opportunity to work with some of the brightest, supportive, most engaging people in my career. There was a genuine spirit of camaraderie that people only read about. The head of the department had some serious leadership issues; however, he was masterful at selling ideas and identifying talent. He did this better than anyone.

    Cons

Egotistical leadership and a bonus program that was arbitrary and capricious. There are no stated bonus target amounts and one year I got a nice bonus (but, in all honesty didn't feel my contributions warranted that much) and another year I got very little and my contributions were exceptional. Everything around salary and bonus is shrouded in mystery. If your boss likes you and is influential, you get a good bonus. Their "rating and ranking" system is beyond subjective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An employee survey might help uncover some issues that should be addressed. There hasn't been one, well, ever or at least as long as I was there--10 years. They need to come into the 21st Century around transparency of salary structure, bonus, and rationale for decisions around both.

Some leaders continue to be "protected" by more senior leaders even though they don't have the competence to lead others. This happens in most companies, but Travelers is very conservative in this regard. Honest, constructive feedback seems to dry up the further you are in the hierarchy.
