I have been working at US Department of Defense

    Pros

People, work satisfaction, chance to contribute and do meaningful work. Many chances for leadership and an emphasis on training and professional development.

    Cons

Difficult to get into, trend towards hiring from within. Resource constraints and the occasional threat of a furlough sometimes stunt organizational and individual growth.

I worked at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Training is abundant, if you desire. You are given the opportunity to cross train and learn other positions. Flexibility of vacation time and the various work hours available.

    Cons

The office environment in certain facilities creates low morale. Individuals are often granted promotions and/or raises based on who they know versus what they know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be able to understand all of the positions that they supervise.

    Pros

Benefits are outstanding, pay is good, good promotion opportunities in other agencies.

    Cons

Yes, one of the biggest downsides is when the government furloughed. That was something that no employee wants to face.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Paid OT. Work weeks are 40 hrs only. All federal holdays are paid. There are 13 paid sick days a year. Great environment for white, conservative, Christian males (ideally older > 50yrs of age).

    Cons

It's like an episode of mad men w/o the alcohol and smoking. It's a pretty racist, sexist, bigoted environment. They removed the colored water fountains but the mentality stayed. This is not a good environment for any minority including women.

Department of the Air Force is hard to promote, unless you're in good with a hiring manager, who manipulate HR.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working with our service members and the benefits (medical, dental, holidays)

    Cons

Not easy to promote. Too much corruption in the hiring process. Hiring managers have the ability to manipulate the system to place whomever they want into a position, no matter their education or experience.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

You do learn something new everyday about technology. The mission is pretty interesting, and some of the people you work with are quite talented and you can learn a lot from them.

    Cons

Typical government b.s. It can get quite frustrating at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to get rid of some layers of management as they give no added value.
