I worked at Unilever PLC as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

At least as an intern, you learn from the best, you work with the best and then you at least think you become the best

    Cons

Even from an intern's standpoint, the workload can sometimes see you spending more than 9 hours in the office or on the road

Former Employee - IT Manager in London, England (UK)

I worked at Unilever PLC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Challenging and interesting projects; working with and learning from some great people.

    Cons

As Unilever has gone increasingly global (from 2005 onwards) the strong emotional connection with employees at the individual level has been lost. It has become a tougher, more selfish world where everyone has to look out for themselves first. And if you work in IT, Unilever is no longer a great place to be, because of successive waves of outsourcing, offshoring, downsizing, etc. IT professionals are no longer as highly valued as before.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I guess Unilever is no different to other big global corporations. Paul Polman has made a huge positive difference to the company, providing a new sense of ambition and energy and focus. But at the expense of the fewer individual employees who are left.... having to work ever harder.

I have been working at Unilever PLC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Headroom to follow up on new ideas, friendly atmosphere, truly global, very human generally, inspiring CSR mission that really matters (not just greenwashing), very varied, some roles offer good work-life balance, virtual working

    Cons

Can be a bit silo-mentality, need to do lots of stakeholder management which can slow things down a bit, pay is good but not best-in-class but the pros outweigh this IMHO

Former Employee - Category Procurement Analyst Intern in Trumbull, CT (US)

I worked at Unilever PLC as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The work atmosphere in the Trumbull, CT office was family oriented. People were always very friendly to one another and teams felt like families. As an intern, I was highly respected among all my coworkers. There is a lot of room to grow in the company too with the companies rotational program.

    Cons

I was not a fan of the location in Trumbull, CT but that is personal preference.

I have been working at Unilever PLC

    Pros

True emphasis on sustainable growth - operating ethically will deliver improved sales
    Outstanding people and collaborative culture
Genuine work/life balance achieved for most employees
Wonderful brands that really do improve consumers' lives
Good pay, based on good performance
Still massive opportunities to grow in new markets and win share through innovation

    Cons

Decision-making can be painfully slow - driven by consensus culture and obsession with keeping everyone happy and informed
Product performance is not necessarily as good as competitors in some areas (laundry, some foods) and some ranges have become too flabby and indistinct
Extraordinarily hierarchical - like the colonial civil service in some respects
Not a business for mercurial minds and instinctive, creative spirits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A record-breaking year in 2012 and another in prospect for 2013 despite global downturn. The temptation must be to just carry on what we're doing right now. But we have to be faster, more imaginative and less bureacratic if we're to see off hungry competitors. We talk about it, but I don't see the people aroud me changing...
