Big company

Social Media Manager (Former Employee)
Deerfield, IL (US)

I worked at United Stationers full-time for more than a year

ProsBenefits are a huge plus. Good working environment. Great people.

ConsCube farm. It's such a big and slow moving company, it's hard to move up "the ladder" quickly, or even get projects completed (and on your resume).

Advice to Senior ManagementMany are there to "rest and vest." Need to look into improving the company culture forward.

An okay company

Warehouse Worker (Current Employee)
Cranbury, NJ (US)

I have been working at United Stationers full-time for more than 3 years

ProsRelatively good pay.
Company gives back to the community

ConsNo work-life balance
Company doesn't care much about the welfare of employees

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs extensive training on human relations and a better knowledge of what needs to be done. At times, some of the managers look lost and out of place.

Overall, United is a good place to work with fair people in upper management.

Prefer Not to Answer (Former Employee)
Deerfield, IL (US)

I worked at United Stationers full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe people I worked with tended to be friendly for the most part and I didn't experience a whole lot of big egos that are prevalent in so many office environments.

ConsThere wasn't a whole lot of opportunity for growth here unless you were in specific departments. The company was very compartmentalized and didn't have a lot off communication across departments. There were major disconnects between Product Management/Merchandising, Transportation, and Inventory Management with little to no collaboration between them. This lead to a lot of confusion and frustration. As an earlier reviewer had written, "all the talent has left" was somewhat true as a statement unfortunately. Many of the new hires coming on had little to no experience in the office supply world and made a lot of poor business decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be more transparency across the various departments and more collaboration amongst them, especially when major decisions that affect multiples areas are the business are involved. This will help strengthen the company rather than cause resentments and good people to leave the company.

Opportunities for growth did not exsist outside of lead or supervisor roles.

Customer Care Representative (Former Employee)
Suwanee, GA (US)

I worked at United Stationers full-time for more than 5 years

ProsRound table and focus group discussions to improve business processes and communication.

ConsOffsite management of local supervisors promoted bias treatment, low accountablity, and high tolerance for low morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementOn site management of supervisors is a must. A supervisor training program should be implemented to ensure certain skill sets equal or exceed those they are leading.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at United Stationers full-time

Prosjob was close to home with good pay & good benefits. Most of management were caring individuals. A lot of opportunity for advancement.

ConsA lot of favoritism, advancement is sometimes, because of employee management friendship and not based on knowledge. Every five/six years they reshuffle and layoff top paid employees.

ProsFriendly senior leaders; outreach activities

ConsHard to change jobs internally. Career advancement within the company is a challenge.

It's OK - If you have the right Director

Manager (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at United Stationers full-time for more than 5 years

ProsTries to do the right thing by it's employees if you are in the right group.

ConsCompany is a little dysfunctional and does not understand shipping/receiving and customer service

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure out what the customer wants/expects and make it happen. Policies are written to protect internal processes first and not satisfy the customer.

Nice Place To Work

Dealer Services (Former Employee)
Deerfield, IL (US)

I worked at United Stationers full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThey believe in fostering a family working working environment, they often promote from within, willing to provide or offer training resources to enhance ones career track, lots of headquarter resources to refer to when needed,

ConsNot enough positions available at the entry level, because the job is so well liked, older employees are reluctant to retire from senior positions, which limits advancement opportunities, A hard company to get into because no one wants to leave.
