I worked at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

Exceptionally smart staff, great resources, lots of opportunities to further your thinking. The professors and post-docs serve as great mentors. A lot of the time, the hours are flexible.

    Cons

Definitely have long hours in the lab and can encounter many challenges in the research field. It's important to stay persistent to get the results that you want

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Collaboration between labs and meeting interesting people. Lots of equipment and opportunities to learn. Beautiful campus and great location. Great health care system for students.

    Cons

Highly bureaucratic. Pay as a graduate student depends heavily on your parent department. Don't expect to make much money. Advisors can often leave a lot to be desired, but there are several shining stars.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time supporting students directly and have ramifications for professors that are terrible advisors.

I worked at University of California Berkeley part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Everyone at the Pacific Film Archive was a joy to work with. They were all very friendly and approachable, and my manager was flexible with my academic schedule. I learned a lot and it gave me insight into film curating and programming.

    Cons

The work was sometimes tedious, as you would consistently do the same work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep being friendly and approachable! It was a joy to learn and grow in that environment.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Research is great at UC Berkeley.
Working with great indivduals who are also, not from Berkeley, CA

    Cons

Being in Berkeley means you are close to SF, so housing prices are extremely high.
Pay isn't great, you will be belowing nearly your entire paycheck on rent.
Lack of cheap, decent food around campus.
Expect to pay $9 for meals which you could get for $5-6 in the mid west

I have been working at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The work environment is great. Berkeley is the best place on earth to live in. The level of science in which you are amerced is one of the highest in the world. The combination of a thriving research environment with an okay salary for a cost of living plus life in the bay area makes it the best place for a postdoc. The work frame is very flexible.

    Cons

Simply no cons!!! Everything depends on your PI, for good and for bad. This is the way for every postdoc, not just specific to Berkeley. No real summer. The salary could be better (as usual). The rent is too high too. Every postdoc comes the an end and you need to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep it as it is.

I worked at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

Great opportunity for students looking for part-time work on campus. Supervisors were kind, consistent and approachable. Day/evening shifts are flexible and structured around student-workers' class schedules. ETS also hosts end-of-semester networking parties that introduce student workers to opportunities in its other departments. It was definitely a rewarding and non-stressful "first job" experience.

    Cons

Nature of position requires long treks around the hilly campus with a bulky equipment pack. This can get a bit tiring and tedious, but it's still fun & doable if you know what to expect.
