    Good supportive employer

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlexibility of work, dynamic working environment, interesting people to work with, good opportunities for promotion, good training opportunities

    ConsAdministration can be slow sometimes

Advice to Senior ManagementStreamline some processes

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Friendly place

Postdoctoral (Former Employee) Reading, England (UK)

ProsThe maths department has a collegial and friendly atmosphere and is supportive of its post-docs. The campus is lovely, and Reading is a nice place to live.

ConsDon't really have much bad to say. The building is a bit old and tatty, and Reading is a bit too far away from London. There's a lot of variation in research quality between departments, so do your homework.

Great experience, but needs work in places.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFlexible in terms of shifts/ academic commitments
Plenty of opportunities for different kinds of work
Good pay, and plenty of shifts available
    Fun and friendly atmosphere

    ConsGood shifts get taken fast
    Little training
Progression can sometimes be affected by your relationship with managers
    No employee benefits

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in better training and proper shift management, there should always be enough people to set up a bar without leaving the bar empty and there should always be a supervisor or manager available during shift.

A place where people are passionate and committed but poorly served by the low level of leadership and management.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat location; pleasant, loyal and able colleagues.

ConsSadly and institution long past its prime and living on a (declining) reputation. The take over by University of Reading has not worked due to 1) no strategy for combining the best of both places and 2) very poor HR decisions (wiping out all the small, but important staff legacy working conditions at Henley) 3) absent or incompetent management/leadership skills. A case of 'physician heal thyself'!

Advice to Senior ManagementStart practising what (your programmes) preach - consult your staff and develop a strategy that inspires and makes sense; put 100% more effort into coaching and bringing together staff/teams; stop wasting time on trying to win business which has more to do with vanity than business sense

    Interesting and laid back

IT Staff (Current Employee) Reading, England (UK)

    ProsEducational environment
Flexible but at the same time strict
Reliable job that will not let anyone down
Location is nice and close to London

ConsRepetitive routines that are too repetitive and finally it is a real pain to work with all the procedures before doing anything

Advice to Senior ManagementMake work more fun a place where everyone can enjoy and feel like they're working not because they're looking forward to the final salary but because they're doing something challenging

University of Reading - Telephone Fundraiser

Telephone Fundraiser (Former Employee) Reading, England (UK)

ProsThe University of Reading is a very organised University that offers a variety of jobs with competitive pay. Depending on the job, you are able to progress quickly to higher levels of authority.

ConsStaff turnover is quite often high at the University of Reading. Interviews are fairly gruelling due to many applications from students.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy experience with the leadership at the University of Reading was a positive one. Management are quick to let you know if you have done well and are very helpful in making sure you achieve the best you can.

    Academia meets big business...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Reading, England (UK)

ProsIf you like a more laid back life it's good, easy to not do a lot.

Good research ratings and lots of funding!!

ConsPromotion through long service, good chance of your dept. being closed if it doesn't 'perform'.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a better look at all those personal domains of power...just because you bring in a lot of funding doesn't make you a manager!
