I have been working at Veeco Instruments full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Exciting technology. Dynamic market. High level professionals. World leader in AFM. Wide variety of other technologies: film deposition, epitaxy, optical and AFM metrology. Clear business and industry orientation.

    Cons

Not that many Cons. May be a bit too much politics where it should not be. Sometimes unclear distribution of duties and chain of comand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I guess a bit more transparency in decision making and less politics will be beneficial for the company.

I worked at Veeco Instruments full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Interesting technology
Good team environment at engineer level
Pay well, but they have to

    Cons

    Poor work life balance
    Confrontational non supportive executive team
Clique of a few senior executives who protect each other and can do no wrong
Not diversified and focused on highly cyclical market
It you relocate, you are going to be an end entered servant for 2-3 years with poor annual raises until the payback period is over
Significant voluntary and involuntary turnover at all levels
       - layoffs are an annual or more frequent occurrence
       - worked for 5 different VP/GMs over 6 years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Replace a few senior executives who foster the conflict
    2) Diversify for stable growth
    3) Survey your employees to see what their perceptions are then act to improve your company and policies.
    4) Focus on your customers

I have been working at Veeco Instruments full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent salary, vacation and benefits. Working with people creating amazing technology.

    Cons

Upper management seems overly concerned with the shareholders and market perceptions. A truly successful company would make them happier. Need the courage and finding to complete new projects in a timely manner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Finish what you start. You have great people willing for you who love what they do and would give you amazing products if allowed.

I have been working at Veeco Instruments full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary, matching 401K, flexibility, can work from home, free coffee.

    Cons

Selling products before they are designed. Major pressure and stress to complete the tasks to design/manufacture prior to shipping tools. Everything is a fire and urgent every single hour of everyday. Transition to market is too fast. Very limited resources and we wear many hats.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to communicate to your employees and actually listen to them and give feedback. When we got a new GM he did not even address our site! Too many upper management upstairs just running into eachother. Not engaging the workers at all.

    Pros

Good people in general. Most people work for technology related engineering without too much paper work.

    Cons

I agree with profound lack of vision and leadership at the engineering group.
Maybe CEO doesn't think it is important to get engineer's trust. because frequent laid off.

    Pros

    Nice work partners, nice people

    Cons

Prepare to get laid off at any time. Very unstable working environment. If has a project, company will hire people; no project, company laid off people. People comes and goes for all of time. Do not expect yearly salary inflation increase. If your salary is not decreased, you are lucky.

    I worked at Veeco Instruments

    Pros

Nice start off salary within any part of the company

    Cons

Micro-managing upon Micro-managing upon Micro-managing of tasks and employees all the way down the chain. Until the buck stops where it stops.
Get rid of employees when management makes bad decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manufacturing companies such as yours needs to focus on their employees and the market to keep competitive and employees happh.
Wasting time thinking that companies would be CAPITAL EQUIPMENT each year is very very stupid if you ask me coming from any type of college graduate with a sense of business. Come on!!
