Current Employee – been working at WellPoint full-time

ProsLargest Health plan so there is so much to do and learn. I'll encourgae young people to choose this company if they would like to setup their career in high pace and rewarding company.

ConsI found not many issues. However, bringing many department to work togather is a challenge here. In all it can be overcome if you have good people skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing the good work. Hire more new garduate to allow them to learn with Wellpoint experienced team.

Current Employee – been working at WellPoint full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFlexible work arrangements (work remotely, etc.)
Talented work force
Good compensation

Cons*Processes / procedures are extremely inefficient (and have been for quite some time).
*Too many reorgs (at least once or twice a year). Just when things start to stabilize, everything is uprooted again for another reorg (and RIFs).
*Development of talent used to be a priority but no longer is.
*Health benefits aren't as good as you would expect from a company whose business is health insurance.
*Too many useless meetings.
*Relatively simple things are made complicated (may be side effect of being a very large company)
*Limited advancement opportunities for remote employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorrect above cons, but especially the first one. Associates have been saying for YEARS on the associate survey that processes are inefficient, but nothing has been done to improve them.

Saint Louis, MO (US)

Current Employee – been working at WellPoint full-time for more than 10 years

ProsHighly competitive compensation while working for a national company and numerous opportunities for advancement. Many positions qualify for partial or full-time work work at home.

ConsCompany reorganizes frequently. Staff VP and higher titles have trouble staying with the organization for more than 3 years on average. Frequent re-orgs make it difficult to hold people accountable to goals because failures are then passed on to the next leader.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on continuity of management. This would allow you to engage the best talent, leverage the broad knowledge in the company and would cause contributors to see their work as something they will have to stand behind vs. something that can hand off to their successor in the next re-org.

Former Employee – worked at WellPoint full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGenerous Pay and good benefit.

ConsFrequent change of management and re-organization. Frequent lay-offs. Has to be located in major offices such as Indianapolis, Cincinati, St Louis, and Los Angeles to have a good chance for career growth. This is a place where you really need to try hard to know someone or the management for career growth. There are a lot of example of mediocre folks in high positions...

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on people who can do the job, pull the boat forward, get the revenue as well as keeping the cost reasonable. Get rid of folks who just do the show and tell a few lies.

Current Employee – been working at WellPoint full-time for more than 10 years

ProsDecent people. I've worked with several departments and have only run into a few bad apples. The lower-level managers tend to be better.

ConsThe benefits have gone from ok to terrible. We have to pay for our plans out of our own pockets and not every plan is available to the employees. The copays keep going up, to the point where it's difficult to be able to afford going to the doctor.

Upper management is also disconnected from the lower ranks. Everyone lives in fear of a layoff and no one plans for the future.

Ten years ago, this was a good company to work for, with upper management that took the time to get to know their people. Now, it's a travesty of rotating management that feels the best way to profitability is to squeeze their employees to the point where they hate their company.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees with respect and you'll get more productivity.

Newbury Park, CA (US)

Former Employee – worked at WellPoint full-time for more than 7 years

ProsGood work/life balance
Decent compensation
Flexible working arrangements ability to work from home.

ConsHigh level of turnover
Management not sure of the future
Culture of fear regarding consistant large scale layoffs
Difficult to advance
Inconsistant leadership
Disengaged workforce
Silo'd culture

Advice to Senior ManagementIndividual sales needs to get its act together begining at the top. Health care reform will have a negative impact on this organization. Confidence is low with leadership for the future of this organization.

Current Employee – been working at WellPoint full-time for more than a year

ProsIt's a much larger company than most people realize, so it offers a lot of stability, decent benefits, and you have access to a lot of resources. Also met a lot of good, smart people genuinely interested in helping people get healthier.

ConsThe downsides really have more to do with the healthcare industry; it's unclear exactly how reform will impact the company.
