I worked at Western Refining part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people are friendly. My boss was a great guy. As a beginning and a newcomer, I was welcomed and the staff in the marketing department were helpful and friendly.

    Cons

It's a corp, so everything has to be approved and this and that all the way up the ladder.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Play some music in the office. It sounds like a morgue.

I worked at Western Refining full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Given a lot of responsibility. This is great if you are a self-starter looking to gain experience like I am. Luckily this was noticed by my manager and I was able to advance.

    Cons

Some of the new direction the management was taking was not for me. Felt like a much bigger company with a lot of bureaucracy. It was a better place to work when it had a more family feel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow down on the bureaucracy. Yes, you need to implement policies and procedures, but you don't need to do it by layering a ton of extra work on your employees. And you can do it without getting rid of the small company feel that you had when corporate was in El Paso.

    Pros

    Chance to meet different people.

    Cons

Low pay, long hours with no real breaks, most employees are not team players just folks looking for some quick cash so they can move along.

Current Employee - Store Manager in El Paso, TX (US)

I have been working at Western Refining full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

How much you learn, if you can learn everything and handle the work load you can work at any other chain and it will be a piece of cake.

    Cons

The pay vs work load and no good feedback. OM and DM usually will only notice the things that are wrong, even if its petty. They are reluctant to give any good feedback.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be realistic on what can be done, we hear when you all had your store this and that but in reality its like you all forget the challenges every store can face. Give recognition when its due instead of bringing your managers moral down with every visit!
