Excellent work, screwed up management

Principal Engineer (Former Employee)
Bangalore

I worked at Yahoo full-time for more than 5 years

ProsVery exciting challenges to solve using the best possible way. Nice people, good perks - good tech culture.

ConsLots of incompetent managers. With a screwed up employee rating system, they are just more powerful and causing more harm. In order to save their buddies, they have already sacrificed real good ones, who make them feel insecure. As a result, the stale proportion has actually increased.

Advice to Senior ManagementIdentify and get rid of bad managers and their non-productive buddies. Revamp the rating system - this is in favour of 'who can stick' over 'who can work'. Track the employees who left, for an year, to check their career curve and use this as feedback to refine the rating system and to use for departing employee's vertical.

Search Associate (Current Employee)
Bangalore

I have been working at Yahoo full-time for more than a year

ProsLots of opportunity. Very Cheerful crowd and departments. Unique energy. Great working environment!!!

ConsWork Life Balance Issues. Especially since the firm is on an aggressive swing, there was less personal space.

Advice to Senior ManagementPerfect what you have then think of other avenues of investment and growth.

Amazing place to work.. But growth and pay scale is not upto industry standards

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Bangalore

I have been working at Yahoo full-time for more than 3 years

Prosrelaxed work atmosphere, Friendly managers, Great facilities like Iphone and Macbooks provided. HR policies are more Employee friendly. Unlimited sick leaves.... Good recreation facilities within the office... No work pressure.

ConsLayoffs. They just lay you off out of the blue with no pay... No job security. Top management changes plans drastically which inturn affects BU's.. Pay scale is poor compared to industry standards for non technical folks. You will quit instantly if pay is what drives u...

Advice to Senior ManagementStart paying better and have a more structured way of laying off ppl... else its a fun place to work.

Nice

Principal Engineer (Current Employee)
Bangalore

I have been working at Yahoo full-time for more than 8 years

ProsYahoo, is one of the best companies to work with. Its values, the talent base, perqs, etc. Over the years, I have seen a lot of good things happening. First thing that attracted me was the culture - people were so friendly and healthy, early days the managers were so good and motivating. Then, there have been ups and downs like any other company. As a company, it is progressing well. The latest strategies, the latest innovation plans and strategies are quite encouraging and motivating.

ConsThere have been downs as well. I have had in average 2 managers per year. And many things are tied to your manager. Thus, this is a big minus. From my perspective, Salary is the biggest con. Opportunities are sometimes not equally given to all; this is again a drawback. So, Career growth takes a toll, at times (for some).

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Very satisfying experience

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
Bangalore

I have been working at Yahoo full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSome of the smartest people I worked with in my career were from Yahoo. You get to do some really interesting work and learn a lot here. HR policies are good with a nice work life balance.

ConsToo many changes at the top level led to shifting priorities. Road maps were made and abandoned and this led to a drop in morale

Advice to Senior ManagementStable policies are important to keep employee morale high.
