What does a Foreign Service Officer do?

Foreign service officers work as promoters of peace, support, prosperity, and protection for citizens traveling abroad. As representatives of the government and people of their home country in foreign countries and with international organizations, they protect the home country's citizens traveling abroad

Foreign service officers assist foreign nationals traveling to the home country and with the evacuation of refugees. They work on economic partnerships and development and support business interests abroad. They also manage embassies and strive to promote diplomacy. They will analyze political events and developments and report and update relevant state departments on their findings. They explain policies and values as they interact with foreign citizens and people in positions of leadership. As guardians of a nation’s interest around the globe they work as consular officers, economic specialist management officers, political analysts and public diplomacy experts. Foreign service opportunities do not need a minimum education requirement and are open to qualified applicants ages 20 to 59.

What responsibilities are common for Foreign Service Officer jobs?
  • Support facility activities and other service lines as necessary.
  • Communicate daily with supply vendors and assist to resolve any issues.
  • Monitor work order queue and complete tickets as requested.
  • Handle build-equipment emergencies on an ongoing basis and serve as a liaison between client employees and outside contractors that are called in to fix problems.
  • Affect conference and meeting setup including coordinating technology and distributing work orders as assigned, assisting with office relocations and service provider coordination, routine walkthroughs, assisting with cold and hot calls, conducting floor plan audits and furniture coordination, perform ergonomics tasks and setups, and maintain, the conference room supplies.
  • Schedule preventive maintenance with coordinator and respond to urgent maintenance calls.
  • Perform routine walkthroughs of the office to assess general conditions to help maintain the overall cleanliness.
  • Plan and participate in job and career fairs.
  • Provide underwriting, appraisal, and fire suppression annual inspection services for state owned structures and utilize a third party claims adjuster to assist in processing claims faster.
  • Coordinate with vendor on furniture adjustments and ergonomic needs.
  • Oversee kitchen amenities to ensure proper function of equipment and supplies are stocked.
What are the typical qualifications for Foreign Service Officer jobs?
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in business, finance, business administration or information technology.
  • A natural leader, collaborator, and problem solver.
  • Is comfortable giving technical assistance and can demonstrate professionalism and attention to detail at all times.
  • Will use sound judgment skills to conduct risk assessment and compile findings to share and present.
  • Experienced in backup and recovery and budget planning.
  • A quick and adaptable learner.
