What does a Helicopter Pilot do?
Helicopter pilots are responsible for the operation and control of helicopters and similar types of aircraft. They fly the aircraft, conduct pre-flight inspections, complete flight logs and other documentation, and oversee maintenance activities. Their primary priority must be to emphasize safety while in the air and ensure the aircraft is maintained in proper operating condition. They also are ultimately responsible for making determinations of whether it is unsafe to fly due to weather conditions or other factors.
Helicopter pilots must have a valid pilot’s license and have completed an FAA-approved training program. They also must have additional licenses and certifications as required by the specific position. Most positions require at least a certain number of flight hours. A variety of clearances and background checks are also required.
