Information Specialist Overview

What does an Information Specialist do?

Information specialists configure, install, and maintain the systems and processes that manage technical and scientific information. After gathering insight that allows them to identify organizational needs, they arrange systems for handling data that will meet those objectives. They install and oversee technological resources, which may include hardware systems, software programs, and other components. They manage system integrations, set up data analysis processes, and provide technical support. They also provide guidance in establishing policies and procedures for managing information and related systems.

Information specialists typically have a bachelor’s degree in a computer science field, along with a background in IT roles. They must be comfortable setting up and maintaining information management systems, and have familiarity with common data management programs and platforms. These roles require strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

What responsibilities are common for Information Specialist jobs?
  • Review, and correct any inaccuracies in the VIP database.
  • Adjust work assignments as needed to cover peak periods, leave and vacancies.
  • Safeguard patient records and ensure compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Provide customer support to the clients, patients and requesters.
  • Assist with QA tasks as directed by management.
  • Assist with the assembly of paper patient care admissions folders.
  • Order and maintain supplies for department on a weekly basis.
  • Assist physicians, staff, agencies and other customers with record retrieval, completion and review.
  • Ensure all releases of information comply with the request, authorization, policies, and State and Federal/HIPAA regulations and guidelines.
  • Perform a daily ICD-10 audit to ensure proper compliance.
  • Maintain compliance with regulations including state and federal regulations.
  • Review the patient medical records to obtain any missing or incorrect data.
  • Must have the ability to stand and sit frequently throughout an eight-hour period, reach horizontally and vertically for overhead use.
  • Monitor performance and provide performance feedback and evaluations for ROI Specialists.
  • Participate and assist with onboarding activities for new employees.
  • Alert the user to any incomplete and/or incorrect documentation through use of the ticketing system.
What are the typical qualifications for Information Specialist jobs?
  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in business, computer science or engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with SAP EHS, SQL Server, GIS, SQL,and Oracle SQL software and systems.
  • Prior experience as a consultant.
  • Demonstrated fluency in computing and writing protocols.
  • A collaborator and critical thinker.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem solving skills.
  • Comfortable drafting notices and reports with an eye on closure.
