What does a Physics Teacher do?

Physics teachers provide instruction on the subject of physics, generally at the high school level. This instruction may occur in a physical classroom or remotely through a virtual learning platform. They may also teach other science subjects, as well. They create and implement lesson plans based on the designated curriculum. They explain concepts and theories. They develop instructional methods designed to make the material interesting and relevant to students of that age group. They maintain student records and review assignments and examinations to evaluate progress.

Physics teachers typically have a master’s degree in science, physics, or education, although a bachelor’s degree may be acceptable. They should have in-depth knowledge in the subject area of physics. They must have a valid teaching license or certificate in their state.

What responsibilities are common for Physics Teacher jobs?
  • Keep accurate and appropriate records in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Refer student to appropriate student and academic support services available.
  • Assess students' progress based on participation, performance in class, assignments, and examinations.
  • Report student learning outcomes, class reviews, and analyze student data.
  • Employ appropriate assessment techniques to measure students' performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
  • Teach assigned courses as scheduled and assumes primary responsibility for and exercises oversight of the curriculum in conjunction with the Department's policies, ensuring both the rigor of programs and the quality of instruction.
  • Maintain attendance records, determine and submit grades timely, and in accordance with established policies and procedures of the College, and communicate progress feedback as well as other relevant information to students throughout the semester.
  • Review/refine a class syllabus to include instructor-specific contact information and course policies and ensuring that the syllabus meets department and college standards.
  • Duties include a flexible schedule of lecture and laboratory, and may involve split teaching shifts or routine travel between campus locations.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending staff development training, workshops, seminars and conferences.
  • Ensure safety and security requirements are met in the classroom and laboratory area.
