What does a Planner do?

Planners facilitate the planning of deliveries within a supply chain and optimize inventory planning that needs service, cost, and timeliness objectives of the employer. They oversee different employees and departments within a supply chain, which ensures the process runs smoothly. They often work in shipping, manufacturing, or in supply chain management companies. Some planners work on a consulting basis and analyze and coordinate supply chains for a company.

Planners are responsible for the maintenance of company inventory and minimizing both overstock and out-of-stock occurrences; this requires them to analyze the supply and demand of a company‘s product and its forecast. It also requires them to monitor inventory, supply, and demand. They assist with customer issues and order problems and help craft effective solutions for the customers by responding to feedback and complaints and through the development of new systems and methods that will prevent further occurrences. Planners need a bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, or related fields. They should have demonstrable knowledge of supply chain management and proficiency in planning software.

What responsibilities are common for Planner jobs?
  • Data gather and analysis in support of strategic projects.
  • Develop, gain alignment and implement project plans.
  • Manage consultant contracts, monitor performance, review work products, and process invoices.
  • Assist in field change requests on a project as needed.
  • Lead in developing project scope, planning, and services and during the contract process.
  • Participate in projects with teammates, and occasionally with clients and stakeholders.
  • Maintain long range files and maps for staff use.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure client requirements are met.
  • Prepare scopes of work, fee proposals and assist with responses to RFPs.
  • Work with the project team on value analysis and constructability reviews.
  • Coordinate material delivery with inventory to support manufacturing schedule.
  • Monitor the cost, schedule and performance factors of critical suppliers.
  • Ensure purchase transactions are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Develop manufacturing concepts and strategies to support business objectives.
  • Oversee and supervise the development of architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, etc.
  • Answer planning, zoning and development process questions from citizens, developers and other agencies.
  • Develop and document new job practices, techniques and standards.
  • Keep current with pipeline tariffs, rate cases and other filings.
  • Respond to inquiries, maintain records, attend meetings, and other duties as needed.
  • Input key data into ERP as part of engineering implementation.
  • Use computers and software programs for various technical planning projects and studies.
  • Participate in regional planning efforts and federal census processes.
  • Generate work orders and take appropriate actions to manage the day-to-day build schedule.
