What does a Production Engineer do?

Production engineers supervise and improve production throughout plants or factories by supporting engineering teams, drafting safety protocols, reporting issues to management, and creating strategies that will enhance efficiency and profits. They supervise staff at the plant or factory and ensure all health and safety codes are followed throughout a shift. They train workers and how to use machinery and identify issues in a production line responsibly. When necessary, they will troubleshoot equipment.

Production engineers also complete administrative tasks including scheduling meetings with relevant departments and stakeholders, drawing production schedules and project budgets, and documenting and reporting unsafe practices. They supervise the process and ensure quality work is being done safely and efficiently, and diagnose issues on a production line while providing recommendations and training to remedy the problem. They stay apprised of advancements in engineering and production and share their knowledge willingly with coworkers. Production engineers need a degree in engineering and relevant licensing as well as experience with CAD software.

What responsibilities are common for Production Engineer jobs?
  • Provide day-to-day technical and engineering support to the operating areas.
  • Assist in planning, design, installation, and maintenance of machinery and equipment in the operating areas.
  • Technical support and troubleshooting of production issues related to equipment, processes, quality, controls, and systems.
  • Develop and facilitate training for operations group such as with operating procedures, safety/environmental protocol, new/revised processes, and equipment.
  • Support planning and directing production scheduling and maintenance activities as needed as well as maintain these activities within budget.
  • Lead development and design of equipment and processes to support safety/environmental compliance, customer needs, new product introduction, and efficient manufacturing.
  • Make recommendations for and provide technical support of facility capital expenditures in support of site strategy.
  • Attend plant reviews, sales, and operations meetings and make presentations as needed.
  • Participate in plant committees in support of safety, environmental, organizational, quality, and manufacturing objectives.
What are the typical qualifications for Production Engineer jobs?
  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in chemical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, or engineering, science Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Dedication to continuous improvement and sound prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, Six Sigma training encouraged.
  • Familiar with assembly and framework systems and comfortable loading and editing materials.
  • Experience with logic analyzer and oscilloscope.
  • Demonstrated sound work ethic.
