What does a Relationship Banker do?

A relationship banker, also known as a personal banker, is the liaison between the customer and the financial institution, building and maintaining that relationship and offering advice on everything from personal and business accounts to investments, loans and trust management services. As a relationship banker, you will have broad knowledge of the products and services offered by the bank as well as the needs and financial goals of your clients, helping them optimize and manage their accounts.

As the main point of contact for your clients at the branch location, you will need to bring your superior written and verbal communication skills to the table each and every day, along with a strong grasp of numbers and finance, a passion for customer service and a professional, friendly demeanor. A minimum of a high school diploma with prior banking experience, or an associate or bachelor's degree is required for all applicants.

  • 1. Reach out to prospective retail banking customers and establish business relationships.
  • 2. Greet customers when they enter the branch and establish a professional, friendly rapport.
  • 3. Evaluate customers' financial needs, provide banking solutions and refer them to the appropriate branch officers as needed.
  • 4. Create new checking, savings and other deposit accounts for clients.
  • 5. Clearly explain product and service benefits, requirements and restrictions, changes and other related product information to clients and bank employees.
  • 6. Manage customer accounts, including opening and closing accounts and overseeing transactions.
  • 7. Provide ongoing banking relationship services with existing clients.
  • 8. Ensure customer satisfaction and resolve issues with banking products or services.
