What does a Service Clerk do?
Service clerks perform a broad range of customer service duties that often involve face-to-face interactions with customers and the general public. They are employed in many industries, including retail, insurance, municipal services, and recreation. They assist customers with finding products, provide information about products and services, and help with locating or ordering items that may be out of stock. They also complete purchases and transactions using a cash register or sales terminal. They can help customers enroll in warranty programs or obtain other supplemental services.
Service clerks typically have a high school diploma, and commonly have a background in retail sales, customer service, or administrative support. They must be highly organized and have strong customer relations skills. Experience operating a cash register and managing sales transactions is helpful.
- Work collaboratively with department staff to ensure effective departmental operations.
- Maintain good public relations with employees, staff and office visitors.
- Consistently monitor accounts to ensure necessary steps have been taken for proper reimbursement of insurance companies.
- As appropriate, take messages and have supervisor return calls.
- Ability to train and/or supervise others, make arithmetical computations, prepare and maintain detailed records, files, and reports and type accurately at a speed consistent with work requirements.
- Responsible for scheduling and patient in-take.
- Associate's Degree in business or secretarial science.
- Demonstrated fluency in product knowledge.
- Comfortable leading and collaborating with team members and management.
- Experience with daily tasks such as slicing, sanitizing, using solvents, and maintaining work stations.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills and attention to details.
