What does a Tax Consultant do?
Tax consultants are experts in tax liability and tax deductions. They prepare tax returns and check for deductions to lower a client's tax burden, and help clients to write trusts and estates. They educate clients about taxes on rental property income, and help define and sort tax implications surrounding life events like a marriage, a birth or death, or a divorce. They also help with managing inheritance issues, charitable giving, or a complex tax situation.
Tax consultants educate clients about various financial issues including trusts and estates, or retirement taxes, and they stay informed about new tax laws and requirements on both the federal and state levels. They may be called upon to meet a client at their location to advise or help reduce their tax liability. They help their clients to make informed decisions about their specific tax-related issues, and they assess and research the problematic situations to identify solutions and determine tax savings and to recommend strategies that will improve a client's liability. Tax consultants have a degree in accounting, taxation, or related fields.
- Position requires regular interaction with employees and clients both in person and via e-mail and telephone.
- Manipulate and analyze client data from various accounting and reporting systems.
- Respond to client inquiries and requests from state agencies.
- Draft filings, such as petitions for redetermination, refund claims, and various other administrative replies.
- Client projects include tax overpayment reviews, tax liability/exposure analysis, voluntary disclosures, audit support/assistance, tax research and memorandums, develop tax matrices and training programs, tax process reviews, compliance support and tax reserve analysis/calculations.
- Perform detailed reviews of transaction data and supporting documentation to determine proper sales/use taxes due in order to quantify refund claims and/or reductions to audit assessments.
- Research tax issues in multiple states and help develop tax planning strategies.
- Address complexities and tax technical issues that arise from client operations.
- Proactively monitor transaction tax legislative proposals and law changes to ensure clients are aware of potential opportunities/costs.
- Assist manager in develop project work plans and scheduling associated project deliverables.
- Degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
- Experience with R language and C software and systems.
- Prior experience in a consulting position.
- Demonstrated integrity and work ethic along with sound decision making and creative thinking capabilities.
- Attention to detail and leadership skills.
- Experience with planning and scheduling and demonstrated problem-solving capabilities.
- Experience with General Ledger.
- Can assist clients in the selection of proper services and offerings.
- Fluency in current laws and regulations.
