What does a Telecommunications Technician do?

Telecommunications technicians are responsible for repairing, installing, modifying, and upgrading a company's telecommunications systems and the relevant and related equipment. They evaluate a customer's needs and perform diagnostic testing on complex systems to identify and resolve various faults, performing temporary fixes until they can do extensive work. They identify technical weaknesses and maintain a company's currently installed telecommunications systems during installation through diagnostic testing. They install systems that best meet the client’s needs and routinely test telecommunications systems to ensure all components function at optimal levels.

Telecommunications technicians check any wiring work they have done to ensure there are no exposed cables or other red flags and order replacement components for equipment and devices from suitable vendors if needed. They investigate and resolve customer complaints in a timely and professional manner. Telecommunications technicians need a high school diploma, a GED, or equivalency and completion of a post-secondary education program in telecommunications.

What responsibilities are common for Telecommunications Technician jobs?
  • Document, track and monitor issues to ensure timely resolution and customer satisfaction.
  • Properly use, store and maintain all test equipment used in system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
  • Maintain daily paperwork required for the site and the crew.
  • Lift, carry push and pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Operate Company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Basic use and care of hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Perform repair and maintenance on multiple services including video, data and voice.
  • Input emergency calls for dispatch to the appropriate responders.
  • Coordinate with on-site technicians who perform all hands-on work.
  • Read signal levels through use of field strength meter. adds and subtracts levels in installation problems. install connectors on different type of drop cable. maintain proper clearances. install tap-off devices.
  • Generate additional company revenue through effective sales techniques and by offering information about product options, sales campaigns and promotions.
  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
  • Generate a 'punch list' and resolution during normal project schedules.
  • Negotiate contracts with consultants, technical personnel, and vendors for services and products.
What are the typical qualifications for Telecommunications Technician jobs?
  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering, computer sciences, engineering technologies or information technology or equivalent experience.
  • Hands-on experience with splicing and antennas.
  • Knowledgeable about terminations and SIP processes.
