I have been working at Smarkets full-time for less than a year
Smarkets is a company where employees are genuinely passionate about what they're building, and improving the ecosystems we work in - whether that's a macro view of changing sports betting for the... better, or a micro view of making our engineering faster and easier. Having worked in or for several tech companies, I can safely say that Smarkets is the only place I have encountered so far where the desire to help others is broadly universal. People care about building good things, and fostering a constructive work environment makes that goal easier for us all. This attitude of engaging constructively is embedded at all levels in the company, with those in the leadership team holding 'drop-in' office hours and showcasing company strategy to all employees. At Smarkets a lot of effort has been put into making our office environment bring out the best in our team. The office itself is lovely, and it's hard not to mention the wonderful in-house chefs and their culinary skills. During COVID, for many of us it has not been safe to journey to the office, so we have been working remotely. Care has been taken to ensure that we are able to work remotely well, and numerous company initiatives (eg, daily coffee calls, running club, weekly 1:1 'Donut' sessions to meet others in the company, etc) help support us until we can safely return to the office. Smarkets is a place where I can tackle fun problems with smart people - what's not to love?
Developing and maintaining a company culture while staff (due to COVID regulations) must be almost entirely remote is difficult for every company. Since I joined, it has been evident that Smarkets... have been putting effort into improving this, but it is a complex problem to 'solve', and one being faced by most throughout the world in the last year. I hope to see Smarkets continue in these efforts as we progress further through the COVID pandemic - so far, they're doing a solid job.
