I worked at American Century Investments full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

On the forefront of industry response to COVID-19 Free gym including classes and trainers pre-pandemic Awesome perks like on-site cafe with subsidized meals in KC Incredible people with lots of... passion for their work, despite the changes in culture that no longer value this quality

Cons

Leadership is out of touch and not accountable for any of their decisions (or lack thereof) Leaders are more concerned about furthering their own agendas and making political power plays instead of... solving challenges through collaboration. Finger-pointing is rampant. Be prepared to be in defensive mode your entire time there. Only senior leaders and those deemed worthy of appointment to extended management committee are able to contribute new ideas. I’ve actually heard a senior leader tell someone their idea was dumb in a meeting. HR is ‘embedded in the business’ meaning they are basically another layer of management that you can’t rely upon for transparency or support in navigating the environment described above.

Advice to Management

Be open to doing what makes sense vs. what makes you look good. Admit you don’t have all the answers. Hold yourselves accountable to your decisions and the problems you cause by lack of direction.... Find your true north and stick to it instead of desperately grasping at straws. Stop coddling a toxic environment and get people who foster it out of leadership roles.
