Former Employee - Skilled Labourer

I worked at City of Winnipeg full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Likely have job security for life.

Cons

They have no interest in encouraging workers to do a good job or more for the public, only that you don't cause anyone higher than you any additional work or inconvenience. No opportunities for... advancement and the union is in bed with HR so they no longer offer the workers any significant protection or support. Left after 8 years so I could actually do some good for my community rather than get yelled at for cutting an additional patch of weeds that the neighbours were complaining about beside a park, because they would now expect the city to take care of it....

Advice to Management

Management is worthless without the labourers who do work. Even if you do have some bad workers, it's ultimately your fault for hiring, your fault for keeping them on staff past their probation, and... your fault that countless hard workers are resigning to pursue a job where they actually feel valued. Stop trying to make it seem like the labourers are the 'lazy city workers' when the lazy city workers are actually you.

Former Freelancer - Volunteer Deputy

I worked at Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder / County Clerk for more than a year

Pros

Pretty much everyone I worked with there was personable, appreciative, helpful and knew their jobs well. I was not there full-time, and I'm sure there would be more to mention here if I were. It... was my first experience working for government, and I didn't expect much, so I was pleasantly surprised. I think of my coworkers there often.

Cons

No coffee or other in-house niceties.
